Ubisoft launched Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles worldwide on October 23, 2024, as a free-to-play PC tactical RPG built around NFT Champions. The company now says it will progressively remove blockchain features. Its announcement describes a wallet-inventory snapshot and the closure of the Forge and Marketplace on May 27, but the available official excerpt does not give the year. A PC Gamer report says the game is shutting down in October, without a precise date in the surfaced report. Those milestones should not be treated as the same event.
What was Champions Tactics?
Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles was Ubisoft’s player-versus-player tactical RPG, set in a dark fantasy world. Ubisoft announced its worldwide launch for October 23, 2024. The Epic Games Store listed it as a free PC download and disclosed blockchain, NFT, or cryptocurrency functionality; that listing alone does not establish whether the game is currently playable. Ubisoft described Champions as digital collectibles with distinct traits and abilities. They were NFTs that players could trade or sell on secondary marketplaces. Ubisoft said 75,000 Champions were available at launch and had been free to mint in July 2024. That figure refers to the launch collection, not a continuing supply or current offer. How did the NFT and gameplay systems work?
Turn-based battles
Players assembled a squad of three Champions and used their skills to counter opponents in turn-based battles. The Champions’ traits and abilities were part of the tactical team-building system, rather than NFTs being the game’s only feature. Ubisoft’s gameplay description.

The Forge and crafting fees
The Forge combined two existing Champions to create a new one. Ubisoft said crafting required a fee, payable in in-game Gold or the cryptocurrency $OAS, and that Champions had a limited number of crafting attempts. The Forge therefore connected a gameplay system to both an in-game currency and a blockchain token. Ubisoft’s Champions Tactics page.
Blockchain and Oasys
Ubisoft identified Oasys as the blockchain supporting the game’s Web3 features and described Oasys as using Proof of Stake. That describes the blockchain infrastructure, not a guarantee about the game’s ongoing operation or the value of any Champion. Ubisoft’s Champions Tactics page.

What is changing, and what is known about the dates?
Ubisoft says it will progressively transition the game away from blockchain functionality. Its FAQ excerpt says player wallet inventories will be snapshotted and replicated in-game, and that the Forge and Marketplace will permanently close on May 27. The retrieved announcement does not state the year, so the date cannot be reported more precisely from that wording alone. Ubisoft’s official site and FAQ.
Separately, PC Gamer reported that the game is shutting down in October, but the surfaced report excerpt gives neither an exact day nor enough detail to establish the game’s present operational status. The October shutdown report and the May 27 closure milestone may concern different services or stages of the transition; the available information does not resolve that distinction. What the launch means—and what it does not prove
The launch made Ubisoft’s NFT-based game a released product rather than an announced project. Its core design combined team tactics with collectible Champions that could be traded, while the Forge linked crafting to Gold or $OAS. Ubisoft’s subsequent plan to phase out blockchain functionality is a meaningful change to that design. The available evidence does not establish the company’s intent to capitalize on a “crypto grift,” nor does it support a claim about the financial performance or value of the Champions.
