Can you play XDefiant now?
No. Ubisoft’s listed online services have been decommissioned. XDefiant was a free-to-play online game, and the cited Ubisoft statements do not establish an offline mode or a way to resume access after the shutdown. There is no supported route to continue playing the game through its official service.
Why did Ubisoft discontinue XDefiant?
Ubisoft said the game had not attracted and retained enough players over the long term to compete at the level the company wanted in the demanding free-to-play FPS market. It also said the results were too far from what was needed to justify further significant investment. That is Ubisoft’s stated rationale, not an independently verified assessment.

In the December 3, 2024 announcement, Chief Studios and Portfolio Officer Marie-Sophie de Waubert wrote: “Despite an encouraging start, the team’s passionate work, and a committed fan base, we’ve not been able to attract and retain enough players in the long run to compete at the level we aim for in the very demanding free-to-play FPS market.” Executive Producer Mark Rubin separately announced: “I am unfortunately here today to announce that XDefiant will be shutting down.”

In his December 3, 2024 community message, Rubin said Ubisoft would issue full refunds to buyers of the Ultimate Founder’s Pack and to players who made purchases during the 30 days before the announcement. Ubisoft said refunds should be automatic within eight weeks of December 3, 2024, and directed players to XDefiant.com for details.
Those were the announced general terms and expected processing window; they do not confirm whether a particular transaction was refunded. The announcement does not establish every platform’s individual transaction process, and its stated window has passed. For an unresolved transaction, check the purchase record and contact the store or platform through which it was made.
How many people played XDefiant?
Rubin said that more than 15 million people had played XDefiant by the time of his 2024 community message. He also described it as the fastest game in Ubisoft’s internal records to surpass 5 million users. Both figures are attributed to Rubin; the cited message does not provide independent verification.
