The right fix depends on which Gears of War game you’re playing, the error you see, and whether the problem affects other online games too. Before changing network settings, note the exact title, your Xbox model, the complete error message or code, and whether you can join someone else’s session. Also check whether other online games work. If only one Gears game is affected, title-specific services or requirements may matter; if several games have trouble, the Xbox connection or home network is a more useful place to investigate.
Check whether Gears online services are currently affected
While the hosting problem is happening, check the official Gears of War Status page. Its displayed update on October 7, 2026, at 4:20:15 PM showed Login, Matchmaking, Store, Post Match, and Progression as Healthy. That timestamp is a point-in-time snapshot, not evidence of current service health; check the page again when you troubleshoot.

Run the Xbox multiplayer test and note the NAT result
On Xbox, open Settings > General > Network settings, then run the multiplayer connection test. Record the NAT status and any specific error the test reports. These results help distinguish a general multiplayer connectivity issue from a problem limited to one Gears title.
Microsoft’s technical documentation describes UDP 3074 as the default preferred local Xbox multiplayer port and explains that this networking behavior is tied to the NAT type displayed to the player. That is useful diagnostic context, not an instruction to forward that port: the documentation is not a home-router setup guide, and a NAT result alone does not establish which router change—if any—is appropriate.

Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi
If practical, connect the Xbox to the router with Ethernet and try hosting again; then compare with your usual Wi-Fi connection. Gears’ official E-Day beta FAQ recommends a wired Ethernet connection when possible for the best online experience and suggests testing it before investigating other network settings. Do not assume that a subscription statement for one Gears title applies to another. The surfaced online-features subscription wording is specific to Gears of War: E-Day; it does not establish a requirement for every game, account, plan, or region. Check the current requirements for the exact title and confirm the account you are using has the entitlement it needs.
