What was Ubisoft’s Project U?
Project U was a game in development at Ubisoft Annecy, the studio behind projects including Steep and Riders Republic. Insider Gaming reported that the project had also been known internally as “Pathfinder.” Ubisoft introduced the concept in September 2022 as a “new kind of session-based cooperative shooter,” according to Insider Gaming’s account of the announcement. The phrase suggested a cooperative game organized around individual sessions, but the available reporting does not establish a final feature set, launch platform, release date, or version of the game. Project U never had a publicly established release window in the sources cited here.
What happened after the intro cinematic leaked?
The March 2025 leak report
On March 7, 2025, Insider Gaming reported that an intro cinematic for Project U had appeared on YouTube and attributed the upload to Shaun Weber. The report did not make the footage an official public reveal. Insider Gaming later said the cinematic was removed through a DMCA takedown; the video’s availability may change, and this article does not link to unauthorized copies.

The reported return to incubation
Insider Gaming reported that Ubisoft had moved Project U back into internal incubation in November 2024, after five years of development. The outlet’s sources described difficulties making the game replayable and repeated delays. This was a reported development status, not a public Ubisoft announcement in the cited coverage.
The later cancellation report
In a report published September 28, 2026, Insider Gaming said Ubisoft canceled Project U in early 2026. It connected the decision to restructuring and continuing difficulty finding a compelling, replayable design. What was known about Project U’s playtests?
Project U had reportedly been tested before the cinematic leak, but details from those tests describe historical builds rather than confirmed final design. A January 2024 Insider Gaming report said a PC-only closed test was planned for February 1–6, 2024. It described up to ten teams of four players fighting PvE enemies, advancing through zones on a map and working toward a boss.
