What Ubisoft said about the layoffs
Ubisoft confirmed a reduction of 40 roles at Ubisoft Toronto in February 2026. Coverage from MobileSyrup and GameSpot reported that the company also confirmed the Splinter Cell remake remained in development at that time.

The 40-role figure is Ubisoft’s number for the Toronto reduction. The reporting does not say how many of those roles worked on the remake, so the figure should not be read as a count of remake developers.
What the Splinter Cell remake is
Ubisoft Toronto leads development of a remake of the original Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell. Ubisoft says it is rebuilding the game from the ground up using its Snowdrop engine (Ubisoft News; Ubisoft Toronto project page).

The December 2021 announcement
Ubisoft announced the remake in December 2021 and described it as being in the very earliest stages of development. The company said at the time: “Although we’re still in the very earliest stages of development, what we’re trying to do is make sure the spirit of the early games remains intact, in all of the ways that gave early Splinter Cell its identity.” That is a description of the project in 2021, not of its current stage.
What is confirmed about the remake today
- Ubisoft Toronto is the lead studio on the remake.
- Ubisoft said in February 2026 that the remake remained in development. That is a company assurance from that date, not a verified measure of current progress.
- No release date or release window has been stated in the reporting available to this article.
- No store listing, price, or preorder for the remake has been established.
What Ubisoft Toronto’s job listings show
The Ubisoft Toronto homepage lists Splinter Cell-related roles, including Producer and VFX Artist. A listing shows the studio was recruiting for franchise work when it was posted. It does not show headcount, schedule, or milestones. Layoffs and open roles can exist at the same studio at the same time, so neither one settles the other’s implications.

How to judge a claim about the remake’s status
- Check the date. A 2021 description of an early-stage project and a 2026 assurance answer different questions.
- Prefer official Ubisoft wording, such as the Ubisoft News article or the Ubisoft Toronto project page, over secondhand summaries.
- Do not infer progress from job titles, layoffs, or staff departures alone.
- Treat any release-window claim without an official source as unverified.
Replaying the original game while you wait
The original Splinter Cell is the game being remade, and it is already released. It is a reasonable choice for readers who want to revisit the source material while the remake’s timing is unknown. Nothing in this article establishes that the remake itself can be bought or pre-ordered.
