PETA’s December 2025 post used Umamusume: Pretty Derby character Silence Suzuka to criticize the way horse racing is portrayed. Some fans objected to the graphic image and argued that the post misread their connection to the real horses behind the franchise. The dispute was about advocacy, imagery, and how fiction relates to real racing—not evidence that fans as a whole oppose animal welfare.
What did PETA post about Silence Suzuka?
Contemporaneous coverage dated the post to December 10, 2025, and quoted PETA as writing: “If Umamusume: Pretty Derby were honest, your favorite horse girl doesn’t get a comeback arc. One failed event, and the race is over forever—just like what happened to the real Silence Suzuka.” The image reportedly depicted the character with a severe leg injury. Gamer Inside’s coverage reproduced the post.
The message juxtaposed the possibility of a fictional comeback with the fate of the real racehorse. That is an advocacy argument about racing’s risks; it is not a documentary description of the game’s story.
Why did PETA use Silence Suzuka?
Cygames’ official character page lists Silence Suzuka as one of the characters in Umamusume: Pretty Derby. The franchise connects its fictional horse-girls to real racehorses, which makes PETA’s reference recognizable to players while invoking the real horse’s history. The character and the racehorse are distinct: the game is fiction, not a complete or documentary account of the animal’s life.

Why were some Umamusume fans upset?
Coverage reported two broad objections: some fans found the image graphic, and some felt that using a character associated with a real horse’s history distorted or overlooked their own interest in those horses. Their response included the view that the franchise already engages with real horses and their histories. Reporting on the backlash documents those objections, but does not establish how common they were across the fandom.
That distinction matters. The available accounts support saying that backlash occurred, not that all or most players reacted alike. Nor does the disagreement reduce neatly to fans caring about horses and activists caring about them: the documented dispute concerns PETA’s message and imagery, and how a fictional franchise should be used to make an argument about real racing.

What is the animal-welfare context?
Cygames’ stable guidance
Cygames’ official portal includes guidance for visiting stables in Japan. Reporting on that guidance says the developer treats stables as working places where real horses live and receive care, and warns that rule-breaking, unexpected visits, and unauthorized photography can disrupt them. It is a practical reminder that fandom can affect real animals and stable staff; it does not show that PETA’s post caused stable disruption.
PETA’s stated position
PETA’s 2025 annual review describes campaigns against using animals for entertainment. That establishes the organization’s stated context for the post, but is not independent proof of every claim in its social-media message or a verdict on every racing stable.

What is known about the aftermath?
The available coverage establishes that the post drew objections, but does not establish measurable donations, policy changes, or effects on the racing industry as a result. It also does not provide a reliable measure of how many fans supported or opposed the post.
