Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics launched on February 17, 2026, for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. To play, you need a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, a compatible Switch console, and one of Nintendo’s two dedicated Virtual Boy accessories. A Switch Lite is not compatible with either accessory.
What launched, and what you need to play
Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics is a game library within Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack—not a new standalone Virtual Boy console. Nintendo announced the collection in its September 12, 2025 Nintendo Direct press release and made it available on February 17, 2026.
Access requires both the Expansion Pack membership and one of the dedicated Virtual Boy accessories. Nintendo says the system is inserted into the accessory for play, using Joy-Con or Joy-Con 2 controllers; the collection presents games in stereoscopic 3D. A membership alone does not remove the accessory requirement.
Which Virtual Boy accessory should you choose?
Nintendo offers two versions: a replica-style unit and a cardboard model. Both are intended for the same game library, but differ in materials, included parts, and setup.

The key decision is whether you want to play this particular library enough to use a dedicated viewing accessory. The standard replica-style unit includes a stand and more listed components; the cardboard model is an alternative with adjustable brackets. Either way, the accessory is mandatory, and a Switch Lite owner would need a different supported Switch system as well. If you already have a compatible console and an Expansion Pack membership, compare the two accessory formats and confirm regional purchase availability before buying.
