This ranking is an editorial selection, weighing craft, influence, lasting appeal, historical importance and variety across genres. It is designed to help you choose what to play first, not to claim that one score settles the debate.
How this PS2 ranking works
The PlayStation 2’s library spans open-world action, racing, role-playing, platforming and more. The ranking below balances how well each game works as a game with what it contributed to the PS2 era and how distinctive it remains. Critical reception and commercial performance provide context, not automatic places on the list.

That distinction matters. Metacritic identifies Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas as its 2004 PS2 Game of the Year, and its PS2 page showed a 95 Metascore from 80 critic reviews when accessed in 2026. That is a strong reception signal, not a universal verdict or a measure of sales. Meanwhile, Sony’s 2003 release named games including Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto III, Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, Kingdom Hearts and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs among notable titles in the 2002 holiday period. It also reported 52 million PS2 game-title shipments worldwide in November and December 2002, up 41% over the same period a year earlier—period shipments, not lifetime sales.
The 15 best PS2 games, ranked
-
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Rockstar’s sprawling crime adventure is the strongest all-round pick: a huge setting, a memorable cast and the freedom to make its world your own. Its high critic score and reported commercial success reinforce its place in the PS2 conversation, but the scale and variety of the experience are the reasons it tops this editorial list. Metacritic’s PS2 page showed a 95 Metascore from 80 critic reviews when accessed in 2026.

Does the best-selling PS2 game have to be the best?
No. Sales measure how many units sold in a defined market or how much revenue a game generated; they do not directly measure quality or personal fit. GamesRadar+, reporting figures attributed to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella and the Circana Retail Tracking Service in 2025, said San Andreas led PS2 games in U.S. units and dollars. That is a U.S. ranking, not a global lifetime total.
A separate 2013 chart document lists 20.81 million worldwide sales for San Andreas, but the publisher attribution is not established in the inspected extract. Treat that figure as a chart value, not a current official lifetime total. Critical reception is another useful but different lens: Metacritic’s score and review count are page values that can change, and neither establishes what every player will enjoy.

Availability depends on the specific game, edition and platform. Some PS2 classics have later reissues or remakes, but that does not mean every original is playable on a current system. Check the store or product listing for the exact title, included edition and supported platform before buying; do not assume a modern collection contains a particular PS2 game.
If you are returning to original PS2 hardware, plan for a memory card if you want to save progress. A 2025 GamesRadar+ report citing Circana figures said more than 147 million PS2 accessory units had sold, including 28.3 million official 8 MB memory cards, with a 61% attach rate. That attach rate is not the share of PS2 owners who saved games: official and third-party memory cards also existed. Confirm a card is specifically for PlayStation 2 and check its condition and capacity when considering a used listing.
