Ubisoft said the cause was a deployment error: content meant for the Japanese version of the game had been uploaded to the worldwide (WW) build on Steam. The company then reuploaded the correct worldwide data. Ubisoft did not describe the change as a decision to censor the worldwide release.
What players saw
Players noticed altered content in Far Cry 4 after a Steam update in early April 2025. The changes included models and assets tied to nudity. Insider Gaming’s report, published April 4, 2025 under the headline “Far Cry 4 Censorship Patch Silently Removes Nudity 10 Years After Launch,” framed the update as a censorship patch before Ubisoft offered an explanation. That framing describes what was visible to players, not what Ubisoft intended.
Ubisoft’s explanation
On April 4, 2025, Ubisoft’s community developer, Patricia Brochu-Gagné according to contemporary reporting, posted a clarification in the r/farcry subreddit. The statement read:
“After looking into it, we confirmed that there was a mistake during a recent update: content meant specifically for the Japanese version of the game was mistakenly uploaded to the worldwide (WW) version on Steam. This resulted in unintended changes, including censored models and assets.”

The post added that the team had “resolved the issue by re-uploading the correct data to the WW depot on Steam.” Ubisoft also told players who still saw anything unusual to restart Steam and check for updates.
Two points matter for reading that statement accurately. First, it is a community post, not a standalone newsroom release, so it is best treated as Ubisoft’s stated account rather than an independently verified finding. Second, the clarification named Far Cry Blood Dragon on PC alongside Far Cry 4. Nothing in the reporting shows that other titles or platforms were covered.

Timeline
- Early April 2025: Players reported changed content following a Steam update. Available reporting does not pin down when the incorrect files first reached each player.
- April 4, 2025: Ubisoft’s community developer attributed the change to Japanese-version content uploaded to the worldwide Steam build and said the correct worldwide data had been reuploaded.
- April 4, 2025 (same day): Insider Gaming published its report on the silent removal of nudity.
The available coverage does not establish how long the altered files were live, how many players received them, or which individual assets changed. It also does not include an independent technical account of how the Japanese-version content entered the worldwide depot.
If you still see censored content
Ubisoft’s stated advice was to restart Steam and check for updates. If that does not restore the content, these general Steam steps are a reasonable next check. They are not part of Ubisoft’s statement.

- Fully close Steam, including the system tray icon, then reopen it.
- Open Library, make sure Far Cry 4 is selected, and let any pending update finish. Check that the game shows no update still queued.
- Right-click Far Cry 4 and choose Properties, then open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files. Steam will re-download any files that do not match the current build. Allow it to finish before launching the game.
- Launch the game again and check the affected content.
If the content still differs after verification, the problem may be on the server side or in a build you have not received yet. Report what you see to Steam Support, which lists Far Cry 4 with Ubisoft as publisher and accepts gameplay and technical issue reports.

The incident was a regional build mix-up on the worldwide Steam version of Far Cry 4, not a stated policy change. Ubisoft says the correct worldwide data is back on Steam. Players who still see altered content should restart Steam, check for updates, and verify the game’s files before assuming the change is permanent.
