In Path of Exile 2, an Uncut Skill Gem is an item you use in the Gemcutting menu to create an eligible skill gem or level up a lower-level one. Its level limits which gems you can choose; it is not itself a finished skill, and it does not make every skill available regardless of requirements.

What an Uncut Skill Gem does

Uncut Skill Gems are progression items. Use one through the Gemcutting menu, then choose an eligible skill gem to create. You can also use a higher-level Uncut Skill Gem to raise the level of an existing lower-level skill gem. The game’s skill gems do not level through gem experience, according to the Path of Exile Wiki’s mechanics overview.

The Uncut Gem’s level determines the level of the skill gem it can produce and helps gate which skills are available. A skill’s own requirements still apply, so check the options and requirements shown in the game before committing the item. The Gemcutting interface is the practical place to confirm what a particular Uncut Gem can make.

Creating a skill gem or upgrading one

Use What happens What to check
Create Choose an eligible skill gem in Gemcutting and turn the Uncut Skill Gem into that gem. The Uncut Gem’s level and the skill’s displayed requirements.
Upgrade Use a higher-level Uncut Skill Gem to raise the level of an existing lower-level skill gem. The level of the existing gem and the choices presented in Gemcutting.

Because the item is spent on a chosen result, decide whether you need a new skill or a higher-level version of one you already use. Do not assume that every skill is eligible at every Uncut Gem level.

Uncut Skill, Spirit, and Support Gems are different

The word “Uncut” describes several distinct item classes, not interchangeable versions of one item. An Uncut Skill Gem is used for skill gems; Uncut Spirit Gems and Uncut Support Gems are separate classes that produce different gem types. The official Grinding Gear Games item-filter information lists Uncut Skill Gems from Level 1 through Level 20, Uncut Support Gems from Level 1 through Level 5, and Uncut Spirit Gems from Level 4 through Level 20. Those listed levels confirm recognized item labels; they do not mean every level is equally common or establish all crafting restrictions.

How to get higher-level Uncut Skill Gems

Higher-level drops are tied to game progression, but exact current drop probabilities and a complete current route are not established by the available official information. Grinding Gear Games said in its 0.2.0h patch notes that it “Reduced the required level for Level 20 Uncut Skill and Spirit gems to begin dropping.” The notes identified this as a reason those items had been infrequent and said players should see more in the highest tiers of endgame maps. This is a dated adjustment, not a drop-rate table or a guarantee about later versions.

A GameSpot guide published December 6, 2024 described enemy drops and quest rewards as acquisition routes and said early vendors did not sell Uncut Skill Gems. Those are historical early-access details, not a reliable guarantee of current quest rewards, vendor stock, or the best way to farm one. An official forum index includes a 0.4.0i entry dated March 24, 2026, but that listing alone does not establish whether that patch changed Uncut Gem acquisition.

What is known—and not known—about drop rates

  • Known: Grinding Gear Games lowered the required level for Level 20 Uncut Skill and Spirit Gems to begin dropping in patch 0.2.0h.
  • Not established here: exact drop chances, current area or monster-level thresholds for each Uncut Gem level, and a complete up-to-date farming strategy.

For current availability, use what drops in your version of the game and check its live Gemcutting options. Do not treat the 0.2.0h change or the 2024 guide as a current probability or route guarantee.
