Yes—PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS has AI-controlled opponents. But the often-cited figure of 99 bots applies to a specific AI Training Match, not to every public match. PUBG has not published a current, universal bot count or percentage for ordinary Normal Matches.
How many bots are in a PUBG match?
There is no official current number for the bot count in a typical public Normal Match. PUBG’s published figure of 99 bots comes from its Update 15.2 notes for the AI Training Match, a guided mock match on Erangel in third-person perspective (TPP). The notes say it was designed to help players learn how a Normal Match works; that figure does not describe ordinary public lobbies. PUBG Update 15.2 patch notes
PUBG’s later onboarding references do not supply a public-match count either. The 2026 roadmap describes a partner bot in a learning environment, while Update 42.2 refers to Basic Training for new players. Why might a lobby have bots?
PUBG has described Normal Match matchmaking as accounting for platform, party type and perspective—such as Solo, Duo or Squad, and TPP or first-person perspective (FPP), where those options are available—as well as skill level measured through an internal Matchmaking Rating (MMR). Its April 16, 2024 developer letter says the system also monitors network latency, matchmaking duration and the skill distribution in matches. It does not state a fixed bot quota or bot percentage. Player-pool size is another reason experiences can differ. In an April 2022 community update, PUBG explained that dividing players across queues could leave some solo matches full of bots, while lowering bot ratios could expose less experienced players to a wider skill gap. That was a design explanation from 2022, not a current formula or guarantee about any particular lobby. PUBG community update, April 2022
As a result, reports from different players are not necessarily comparable. Queue type, platform, region, local time, party size, perspective, player experience and the number of people actively matchmaking can all matter. PUBG’s public explanations identify some matchmaking considerations and pool tradeoffs, but do not quantify bot rates for each circumstance.

Are bots only for new players?
No. Official material confirms bots in the dedicated AI Training Match, and PUBG’s matchmaking discussion describes bot ratios as part of the broader player-pool tradeoff. However, the available official statements do not establish a current bot share by player experience or prove that bots appear only for beginners. The April 2024 letter says matchmaking uses MMR and discusses efforts to place new and inexperienced players with others of similar skill; it does not disclose how that affects bot counts.
Does PUBG fill empty lobbies with bots?
PUBG has explained that thinner or divided matchmaking pools can lead to more bots, but it has not published a current rule saying that every partially filled lobby is completed with a specified number of AI players. Without a current count for a particular queue and region, seeing bots—or believing a lobby is quiet—is not enough to calculate the human-to-bot mix.

What PUBG has and has not disclosed
- Established: PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS includes AI opponents, and its AI Training Match was described as having 99 bots.
- Not established as a general rule: that public Normal Matches have 99 bots, or that every lobby uses a fixed human-to-bot ratio.
- Not published in the official sources cited here: a current universal bot percentage or a current bot-count breakdown by platform, region or queue.
For a useful comparison, identify the mode and queue, platform, region, approximate play time, party and perspective, and whether the match was training, Normal or Ranked. Anecdotes without those details should not be treated as a game-wide rate.
