The recipe makes one sword. You can then use it in melee combat, choose enchantments for your needs, or later upgrade it to netherite.
What you need and how to craft the sword
- Two diamonds
- One stick
- A crafting grid
- Open a crafting grid.
- Place one diamond in the top cell of a column and a second diamond directly below it.
- Put the stick in the cell immediately beneath the second diamond.
- Move the resulting diamond sword into your inventory.
The recipe follows Minecraft’s general sword pattern: two matching materials in a line above a stick. Minecraft’s sword guide lists diamonds among the materials used for swords.
How to use a diamond sword
Equip the sword for melee combat. Swords are also especially effective for breaking cobwebs, according to Minecraft’s official sword overview. The official overview describes sword strength as increasing with material tier and notes that enchantments can add damage; it does not provide a current exact damage figure for a diamond sword.
Choose enchantments for your purpose
Different enchantments address different priorities. Minecraft Help identifies Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods as melee-weapon enchantments; Fire Aspect is another melee option, while Unbreaking and Mending support durability and repair. Check the in-game enchantment interface for availability and compatibility rather than assuming every listed effect can be applied to every sword. Minecraft Help’s items, tools, and weapons guide summarizes these enchantment categories.

- Damage specialization: Consider Sharpness, Smite, or Bane of Arthropods depending on the target and the enchantments available to you.
- Fire effect: Fire Aspect is a melee option.
- Longer service life: Unbreaking and Mending are general-purpose choices related to durability and repair.
- Sweeping attacks: Sweeping Edge increases sweeping attack damage, but the official sword guide identifies it as Java Edition-only. Do not expect that mechanic in Bedrock Edition.
Upgrade a diamond sword to netherite
When you are ready to upgrade, use a smithing table with the diamond sword and a netherite ingot. Minecraft’s netherite article says the upgrade preserves the sword’s durability, enchantments, and custom name.
The same Minecraft article gives an approximate durability comparison: a diamond sword can deal about 11,000 damage points before breaking, while a netherite sword can deal more than 16,000. These are published approximate totals, not a guarantee for every edition or use pattern.

Diamond or netherite?
A diamond sword is the craftable option described above; upgrading it to netherite is a later progression step that preserves its existing attributes. The official sources establish the broad durability comparison, but not a complete current Java-versus-Bedrock stat comparison, so avoid treating the approximate totals as a precise cross-edition benchmark.
