To befriend Linus, talk to him when you find him around the Mountain, give him gifts he loves—especially on his Winter 3 birthday—and complete his requests. His loved gifts include Blueberry Tart, Cactus Fruit, Coconut, Dish O’ The Sea, The Alleyway Buffet, and Yam. Friendship also unlocks recipes and events; at eight hearts, support Linus’s choice to keep living outdoors rather than urging him to move.
Where to find Linus
Linus lives in a tent in the Mountain area, west of the Mines and north of Pelican Town. He does not stay by his tent all day: his route changes with the season, and rain overrides his normal schedule. In spring he visits the west side of the lake in midmorning and returns to the area near his campfire later. In summer he walks around the lake and comes back to his tent in the evening. In fall and winter, he makes trips toward the Spa. For exact times and special-day exceptions, check the Linus schedule on the Stardew Valley Wiki.

What gifts does Linus like?
Loved gifts
Linus loves Blueberry Tart, Cactus Fruit, Coconut, Dish O’ The Sea, The Alleyway Buffet, and Yam, as well as universal loves. Choose what is practical for your current season and access: Yam is a seasonal crop; Cactus Fruit and Coconut are desert foraging items; Blueberry Tart and Dish O’ The Sea require cooking. The Alleyway Buffet is a book that increases the chance of finding items in trash cans. The complete preference list is on the Linus wiki page.
Liked gifts
Linus likes most edible foraged items, most universal likes, all eggs except Void Egg, most fruit, and all milk. “Most” matters: some items in these broad groups are exceptions, so check the individual item on his preference list if you are unsure.

Gifts to avoid
He dislikes Treasure Chests and returns them, and dislikes most gems and foraged minerals. His hated gifts follow the universal-hate rules with exceptions; the 1.6 notes specifically say Carp and Wild Bait are neutral rather than hated. Consult the wiki before giving him an unusual item.
How gift timing and friendship points work
You can give Linus two gifts per week, plus one additional gift on his birthday, Winter 3. A normal loved gift is worth 80 friendship points and a liked gift 45; a birthday gift multiplies the gift’s friendship points by eight. Gift quality can further change the points for liked and loved gifts. Talking to Linus daily, completing quests, and making certain event choices can also build friendship. See the Friendship guide for the mechanics.
For an efficient routine, give a loved item on Winter 3 if you have one, then use your weekly gifts on loved or liked items you can obtain reliably. If you do not have a preferred item, talking to him is still useful.
Linus’s heart events and recipe rewards
Zero-heart scene
After reaching 50 friendship points, enter town between 8 p.m. and midnight on a day without rain. The event cannot occur before Spring 7, Year 1. Linus is searching through trash; the player’s dialogue choices do not change friendship with him.

Choose “I’m just pleased that Linus is doing well” to gain 250 friendship points. Linus explains that living outdoors is his choice and that he prefers to live alone in harmony with nature. He is not marriageable, and there is no gameplay need to persuade him to move.
Build friendship through requests
On Fall 8, Linus asks for his Blackberry Basket. Returning it rewards one heart, or 250 friendship points. He may also post item requests: a Help Wanted request gives 150 friendship points, and the Community Cleanup Special Order gives 250 friendship points alongside its other rewards. Linus can also send gifts by mail once your friendship is above zero; the likelihood increases as friendship rises.
Is the official guidebook necessary?
No. The Stardew Valley Wiki provides the schedule, gift preferences, and event triggers needed to befriend Linus. The fifth-edition official hardcover guidebook is an optional offline reference; its publisher describes it as a companion to version 1.6.8 and says it includes gift preferences. It was updated for that version in June 2024, so check whether it covers the game version you play before relying on it for later changes. See the official Stardew Valley shop and Fangamer’s guidebook page.
