To make a wooden pickaxe in Minecraft, use a crafting table: place three planks across the top row of its 3×3 grid, then put one stick in the center slot and another in the slot directly below it. Take the pickaxe from the result slot.
What you need
- Three planks for the pickaxe recipe. Any plank type works, and the planks can be mixed.
- Two sticks.
- A crafting table, which provides the 3×3 grid this recipe needs.
Make the wooden pickaxe
- Open a crafting table. If you do not have one, make it with four planks, then place and open it. Minecraft’s official crafting guide explains how planks and crafting tables work.
- Make two sticks if needed. Place two planks vertically in a crafting grid. You can do this in the 2×2 inventory grid or at a crafting table.
- Arrange the ingredients. Put three planks in the top row. Put one stick in the middle slot and the other in the bottom-middle slot, as shown in the Minecraft Wiki beginner’s guide.
- Collect the pickaxe. Take it from the output slot. If the recipe does not appear, check the ingredient positions or use the in-game recipe book to find and place the recipe when you have the materials.
How much wood to gather
The pickaxe itself uses three planks and two sticks. If you also need to craft the sticks and a new table, allow four planks for the table, two planks for the sticks, and three planks for the pickaxe: nine planks total. If you already have sticks or a table, you need fewer new planks.
What to do with your first pickaxe
A wooden pickaxe is an early survival tool. The beginner guide describes it as a way to mine cobblestone and move on to stone tools. The exact recipe-book controls and interface presentation can vary by edition or platform, so follow the crafting interface available in your game.
