Yuzu can no longer be obtained from an official source, so there is no currently supported Yuzu build to install on Steam Deck. The Nintendo Switch emulator’s original distribution ended after a 2024 settlement with Nintendo. EmuDeck’s SteamOS documentation still describes how Yuzu was configured on Steam Deck, but that page is legacy setup documentation, not evidence that a working, maintained build is available today. This guide explains what the old setup path involved, what the legal record says, and what to verify before trusting any file or instruction you find.
What EmuDeck’s Yuzu setup path involved
EmuDeck, a configuration tool for SteamOS, documents Yuzu as a Nintendo Switch emulator. Its Yuzu page lists the configured type as an AppImage, a self-contained Linux application file, and describes two ways to start it: from Desktop Mode, and through Steam’s Game Mode with shortcuts added by Steam ROM Manager. The EmuDeck documentation states: “Yuzu is a Nintendo Switch emulator.”
Distribution status: the official route closed in 2024
EmuDeck’s FAQ states that there is no longer an official source for Yuzu after the original GitHub pages were taken down. The most recent dated reporting on the matter is from March 2024, and it is the basis for the statements below. If you find newer reporting, verify it against the original filings before relying on it.
| Date | Event | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| February 2024 | Nintendo files a complaint against Yuzu’s developers. | Nintendo alleged that Yuzu’s circumvention functionality enabled use of pirated games. These are allegations in Nintendo’s filing, not findings. |
| March 4, 2024 | Nintendo Life reports that Tropic Haze agreed to pay Nintendo $2.4 million and to cease Yuzu operations. | The reported settlement terms, summarized from a joint motion. This is dated reporting of an agreement, not a court ruling on the underlying questions. |
| July 2024 | Nintendo files a DMCA takedown with GitHub concerning Yuzu. | Nintendo’s position that Yuzu circumvents technological protection measures, including its encryption and keys. |
Taken together, these records mean the original project stopped distributing Yuzu. They do not establish whether any copy circulating elsewhere is authentic, complete, or safe to run. Treat every third-party mirror or fork as unverified.

The legal position, attributed carefully
Nintendo’s February 2024 complaint described Yuzu as software for playing Nintendo Switch games on general-purpose computers, and said its Windows and Linux versions were compatible with PCs. Nintendo’s July 2024 GitHub filing states: “The yuzu emulator is primarily designed to play Nintendo Switch games.” Both statements are Nintendo’s characterizations in legal and takedown documents, not neutral findings.
The settlement reporting describes an agreement between the parties. It does not establish a court decision that resolves every legal question about emulators, personal game backups, or conduct in every country. Whether a particular activity is lawful depends on jurisdiction and circumstances, so this guide does not treat emulation as universally legal or universally illegal.

Setup steps for the legacy EmuDeck path
The steps below follow the structure of EmuDeck’s documented setup. They describe how the software was configured. They are not a guarantee that the software runs, and they do not cover obtaining any build, key, or firmware file.
- Confirm the build’s origin first. EmuDeck’s documented path uses an AppImage build. Because no official download exists, the origin of any build you have is the first risk point, and this guide cannot verify a specific file.
- Launch from Desktop Mode. Switch to Desktop Mode and start the AppImage there before attempting anything in Game Mode. This isolates whether the build itself starts.
- Place the files EmuDeck lists. EmuDeck names
prod.keysandtitle.keysas key files used for decrypting game files, and it lists the folders it expects for ROMs, keys, and firmware. Use only files you are authorized to use. - Add firmware if a game needs it. EmuDeck notes that some games that use Miis require firmware containing Mii data. Place firmware in the firmware location EmuDeck specifies.
- Add Game Mode shortcuts. EmuDeck describes using Steam ROM Manager parsers to add game shortcuts that appear in Game Mode. Confirm each game launches in Desktop Mode before adding it to Game Mode.
Storage: an optional accessory, not a fix
EmuDeck documents setups that use removable storage, so a microSD card is a reasonable option for keeping files off the Steam Deck’s internal drive. It is optional. A card is not a Yuzu requirement, does not improve game speed, and does not resolve compatibility problems.

Game compatibility and performance
This guide does not establish which games work, how well they run, or what frame rates to expect. No game testing was performed for it, and the EmuDeck page’s troubleshooting section includes notes dated 2023 that reference older SteamOS, Mesa, and Yuzu versions. Those notes describe a past configuration and should not be read as current results.
The Mii firmware requirement is the one compatibility rule EmuDeck states explicitly, and it applies only to games that use Miis.
Rank #4
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Troubleshooting checklist
- The build won’t start in Desktop Mode. Stop there. Do not troubleshoot Game Mode until the build runs on its own, and do not assume the EmuDeck troubleshooting notes match the build you have.
- A game is missing from Game Mode. Re-run the Steam ROM Manager step and confirm the game launches in Desktop Mode first.
- A game fails only in Game Mode. Compare against a Desktop Mode launch. If it works there but not in Game Mode, the problem is in the shortcut setup, not the emulator.
- The EmuDeck page or a linked file is missing or has changed. The official route has been closed since 2024, so an absent page or file is not a reason to seek a replacement from unverified sources.
Alternatives: what to compare
This guide does not rank alternative emulators. The evidence did not establish current availability, maintenance status, or game-level compatibility for any named option, so no ranking would be reliable. If you evaluate options yourself, compare four things: whether an official source exists, whether the project is actively maintained, whether SteamOS setup is documented by a maintained tool, and whether game-specific compatibility reports are recent and from a named tester.
