If that child already exists, it returns immediately; if not, the calling thread pauses until the child appears. You can set a timeout, but if it expires the method returns nil—it does not create the missing object or guarantee that one will arrive.
What WaitForChild does
Call the method on the Roblox Instance whose child you need. It checks only that instance’s direct children for the requested name; it does not search every descendant. If a matching child is present, the method returns it without yielding. Otherwise, the current thread yields until the child is added, unless an optional timeout expires first. See the Roblox Creator Hub Instance API reference.
local part = workspace:WaitForChild("Part")
print(part.Name .. " has been added to the Workspace")
This no-timeout form follows Roblox’s API example. Use it when waiting indefinitely is intentional and the experience’s design ensures that the child will be added.
How to use a timeout safely
The optional second argument is a timeout in seconds. If the child does not appear before that time elapses, WaitForChild returns nil. Check the result before accessing its properties or calling methods on it.

local ReplicatedStorage = game:GetService("ReplicatedStorage")
local module = ReplicatedStorage:WaitForChild("PickupManager", 10)
if module then
require(module)
else
warn("PickupManager did not become available in time")
end
The ten seconds here is an example, not a Roblox-prescribed default. Choose a limit that suits what the script should do if the object remains unavailable.
Without a timeout, a wait can continue indefinitely. Roblox’s API reference says that after five seconds without a return, the engine prints a warning that the thread may yield indefinitely. That warning is not a cancellation or a five-second timeout: the thread keeps waiting.

Why client scripts may need to wait
Roblox does not guarantee the order in which objects and their changes replicate from the server to a client. A client script can therefore run before a server-created object has arrived. In that situation, waiting for a named child can prevent the script from trying to use it too early. Roblox describes this behavior in its replication-order documentation.
Startup timing depends on where a client script runs. Content in ReplicatedFirst loads before the rest, so a script there can safely access objects in ReplicatedFirst, while other services may not yet have loaded. After the game has loaded, scripts in PlayerScripts and client scripts in ReplicatedStorage can safely access ReplicatedStorage without WaitForChild. Character scripts run after the character spawns. These lifecycle notes do not make every later access safe: streamed or dynamically created objects can still be unavailable.

How streaming changes object availability
When Workspace.StreamingEnabled is true, Roblox initially sends a client a subset of Workspace content closest to that client. Objects elsewhere may not yet be present locally. Even when a model is present, its children are not necessarily all available at the same time.
For streamed content, Roblox documents ModelStreamingMode.Atomic as an option that makes a model and its descendants present together when the parent is present. If atomic streaming is not appropriate, a script can wait for the particular child it needs. Neither approach should be treated as a promise that an object will eventually become available to every client. See the Roblox streaming documentation.

Remote events and functions add another timing issue: the event or function and an instance it refers to travel independently. A client may receive the message before the instance, or the instance may never be available to that client. If the script cannot proceed without it, wait for local availability and consider a timeout. For a destination that can be anticipated, a server can also request streaming around an area with Player:RequestStreamAroundAsync(). Roblox covers these cases in its streaming and remote events guide.
Choose between waiting and checking now
| Situation | Approach | Behavior |
|---|---|---|
| The child should already exist and the script should check immediately | FindFirstChild("Name") |
Returns a matching child if present; the caller handles absence. Roblox describes this as the more efficient alternative when the object is assumed to exist. |
| The child may arrive later and the script must wait to proceed | WaitForChild("Name") |
Yields until the child appears. |
| A streamed or remotely referenced object may never become available | WaitForChild("Name", timeout) and check for nil |
Bounds the wait and lets the script handle the unavailable-object case. |
The choice depends on whether the script can continue without the object, whether streaming affects its availability, and what recovery action makes sense if a bounded wait expires. The API details for both methods are in the Instance reference.

Common mistakes and fixes
- Expecting a recursive search:
WaitForChildchecks direct children only. For a nested object, wait one level at a time:workspace:WaitForChild("House1"):WaitForChild("Door"). - Using a timed wait without checking its result: A timeout can produce
nil. Test the result before indexing it or calling a method on it. - Reading the five-second warning as cancellation: It is a warning, not a timeout. Supply a timeout if the script must stop waiting after a defined interval.
- Assuming a model’s arrival means all its children are ready: Streaming can make descendants available separately. Wait for the specific child or consider whether
ModelStreamingMode.Atomicfits the model. - Assuming an instance in a remote-event payload is already available locally: Event delivery and instance replication are independent. Wait for the instance if the receiver needs it, and handle the possibility that it never arrives.
- Assuming a yielding event callback prevents later callbacks from starting: Roblox documents that a later message handler can start before an earlier one resumes after
WaitForChildor another yield. Do not rely on callbacks completing in the order they began; see the remote event yielding guidance. - Using a wait to hide a naming or setup error: Waiting cannot create a child or fix a misspelled name. If a timed wait expires, verify the name, parent, and code that is meant to add the object.
