Unravel Two is a charming puzzle-platformer that works alone, but its defining feature is local co-op: two Yarnys linked by a strand of yarn use that connection to move through the world and solve traversal puzzles. It’s an appealing choice for shared play on one screen, less compelling if you want online co-op, a story-led sequel, or consistently varied challenges.
What kind of game is Unravel Two?
Published by Electronic Arts and developed by Coldwood Interactive, Unravel Two is a side-scrolling puzzle-platforming adventure. You guide two small yarn characters, called Yarnys, through obstacle-filled levels. Their shared strand of yarn is both a physical link and the central tool for getting around: the characters jump, slide, swing, run, and support one another to cross gaps and solve environmental challenges.

That connection gives the puzzles a clear identity. Rather than relying only on switches or abstract logic, many challenges ask you to use the yarn and the characters’ positions to make progress. EA’s product description presents the game as playable in single-player or local co-op. In EA’s June 9, 2018 launch announcement, Creative Director Martin Sahlin described its theme this way: “Unravel Two is about the new bonds that form when we cut ties to the past.”
Is Unravel Two good solo?
Yes. You can play alone and control both Yarnys, so a second player is not required to complete the adventure. Solo play lets you handle the linked characters and their shared movement yourself; the same connection mechanics remain part of the puzzles.

Local co-op is the more distinctive way to play. It turns coordination into part of the challenge: each person controls a Yarny, and the pair must work together to navigate the level. If you’re choosing the game specifically to play with someone else, check that your platform and play setup support two players on one system.
Does Unravel Two have online co-op?
Don’t buy it expecting an online co-op campaign. The cited review coverage explicitly notes the absence of online co-op, while EA describes the multiplayer option as local co-op. The supported pitch is shared play on the same system, not playing together remotely over the internet.
What do reviews praise—and criticize?
Metacritic’s critic-review page reflects a generally positive response to the platforming, visual presentation, and natural feel of co-op. The linked characters give cooperative play a practical purpose, while the game’s colorful environments and yarn-based movement help give it a distinctive look.
The reservations are worth weighing, especially if you’re coming to the sequel for more than cooperative platforming. Some critics found the story less emotionally affecting than the first Unravel; others described sections as repetitive or clunky, or felt that some challenges were too easy. These are differences in emphasis and taste rather than a single universal verdict: the game’s mechanics and presentation are its clearest strengths, while narrative impact and puzzle variety are less consistent.

Metacritic listed a user score of 7.6 from 435 ratings when accessed on October 8, 2026. That is a user aggregate, not a critics’ score, and both the score and rating count can change.
Which platforms support Unravel Two?
EA lists the game for the EA app, Steam, PlayStation 4, and Xbox. Nintendo’s official listing gives the Switch digital release date as March 22, 2019. Platform features differ, so check the relevant store page for current availability and terms.

Is Unravel Two worth buying?
It’s easiest to recommend if you want a visually appealing platformer to play locally with another person, or if you’re happy to control both characters yourself. The yarn-link mechanic gives the game a clear basis for movement and cooperation, and reviews commonly praise its presentation and platforming.
Look elsewhere if online co-op is essential, or if you mainly want an emotionally powerful story or a consistently fresh, demanding puzzle challenge. Store prices and subscription-catalog availability can change; check the official storefront for your platform before buying.
