The biggest gaming trends in 2026 are not a single new platform or technology, but a shift in where growth comes from: mobile publishers are working harder to retain players, PC and console releases had a strong 2025, games are reaching across devices, and creators and AI are changing how some games are made and played. Cloud gaming is expanding as an option, but survey results do not show it replacing local play. The figures vary by geography and method, so U.S. consumer spending, global platform revenue, survey responses and forecasts should not be treated as interchangeable.
What did the games market look like in 2025?
U.S. spending remained high, but the final total was revised
The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) reported final U.S. consumer spending of $60.8 billion for calendar 2025: $52.4 billion on content, $5.4 billion on hardware and $2.9 billion on accessories. The components add to $60.7 billion because of rounding. ESA initially announced $60.7 billion in February 2026, then noted a March restatement by Circana and Sensor Tower; use the updated ESA release for the final total.
The same release reports a 20% rise in U.S. spending on subscription services and a 1% rise in U.S. mobile game spending. Its 1.4% year-over-year growth rate accompanied the initial headline figures, so that rate should be read with the revision caveat rather than applied unqualified to the updated total. These are U.S. consumer-spending figures, not global revenue estimates.
Mobile accounted for enormous reach and volume
Sensor Tower reports that mobile game revenue reached $82 billion in 2025, up 1% year over year in its measure, while download growth slowed. The $82 billion is a mobile-market figure, not total gaming revenue. The company counted 52 billion game downloads across mobile, PC and console, with mobile responsible for the vast majority. Separately, the ESA says 82% of U.S. players age 8 and older use a mobile device to play; that is a U.S. player-use statistic, not a share of global players or spending. PC and console releases also grew
In Sensor Tower’s 2025 data, PC and console game revenue rose 13%, downloads rose 7%, and releases rose 8.4%. The report points to demand for both major releases and indie action games, including viral cooperative titles. Those market-level results indicate a strong year for PC and console overall, not equal growth for every genre, studio or game.
How is mobile gaming changing?
With download growth slowing while revenue rises modestly, the commercial focus is increasingly on retaining and engaging an installed audience. Sensor Tower highlights live operations, events, retention and monetization of existing players, including IP collaborations, as ways publishers respond. This is a shift in emphasis, not proof that every mobile game relies on the same model.
The broader signal is consistent across the two reported scopes: Sensor Tower’s mobile revenue measure rose 1% globally in its report, while the ESA separately recorded a 1% increase in U.S. mobile game spending. The figures are similar, but they measure different markets and should not be combined.
Why are PC and console games drawing attention?
Sensor Tower’s growth figures reflect both a greater volume of releases and stronger revenue and download activity in 2025. Its report highlights premium releases alongside indie action and cooperative games, suggesting visibility can come from large launches as well as smaller games that spread through player communities. The ESA’s U.S. top-grossing list placed Battlefield 6 first among full games on console and PC. That ranking is a specific U.S. result, not a global sales chart or evidence that all studios benefited equally. The ESA release and Sensor Tower report describe different parts of that picture.

What does platform convergence mean for players?
Platform convergence means the boundaries between console, PC and mobile are becoming less rigid: players may move between devices, and companies can combine or connect ways to access games. It does not mean that every game runs on every device, that progress always carries over, or that subscriptions, streaming and cross-platform play are the same thing. Compatibility, cross-play and saved progress depend on the specific game and service.
Boston Consulting Group (BCG) describes three distinct access models. Its examples show how the models differ, not a complete or permanent catalogue of each service:

BCG’s 2026 outlook also argues that players are moving across devices. Treat that as a developing behavior and industry strategy, not a guarantee of seamless continuity for every player.
Is cloud gaming ready to replace a console or gaming PC?
No. BCG’s 2025 Gaming Survey found that 60% of surveyed players had tried cloud gaming, and 80% of those who had tried it reported a positive experience. But about 70% of gamers who had tried it said they spent less than a quarter of their gaming time on cloud. Trying a service, liking the experience and relying on it for most play are different measures.

BCG estimates global cloud-gaming revenue at $1.4 billion in 2025 and forecasts $18.3 billion in 2030. The forecast includes streaming-only services and a portion of hybrid and bundled services; it is not a final 2030 result or a measure of all games played online.
For an individual player, the practical trade-offs are:
- Network quality and latency: streamed play depends on a sufficiently reliable connection and may feel different from local processing.
- Library and access terms: check which games are available, whether access is a subscription or purchase, and whether titles can leave a catalogue.
- Device compatibility: confirm that the service and game support the device you intend to use.
- Total cost: compare any recurring subscription with the cost of using hardware you already own or buying dedicated hardware.
- Continuity: verify cross-device play and saved progress game by game rather than assuming they are included.
BCG’s report does not establish current plan prices or compatibility for every service and region, so those details need checking with the service before choosing.
Why are creators and user-made content becoming more important?
Games increasingly function as platforms where players make, share and discover content as well as play developer-made releases. In BCG’s survey, 40% of respondents said they consumed more user-generated content than a year earlier. BCG also estimated that creator payouts from Fortnite and Roblox combined would exceed $1.5 billion in 2025. The payout figure is an estimate, not an audited result, and those platforms are prominent examples rather than a description of the entire games market.

Social and multiplayer play are another part of this shift. Unity’s 2025 report describes surveyed developers working on multiplayer and social experiences. Such features can help turn a game into a place players return to with friends, but they do not make every game a creator platform or guarantee sustained engagement.
How is AI affecting game development?
AI is showing up in developer workflows, but the available figures measure different things. Unity says 96% of surveyed studios used AI tools in selected workflows, and 79% of survey respondents felt positive about AI tools in game development. In a separate analysis of Steam metadata, BCG found that around 20% of new games disclosed AI use by mid-2025—twice the share it found a year earlier.
These results are not contradictory: one concerns surveyed studios’ use of tools in selected workflows, while the other counts new Steam games that disclosed AI use in metadata. Disclosure is not a census of all AI use, and neither source shows that AI automatically improves game quality or lowers development costs. BCG identifies app-store opening as a potential shift in distribution, including the possibility of alternative payment routes or direct distribution for developers. Regulatory actions and court rulings in the U.S. and Europe are part of that evolving picture, but they do not create one settled global rule. The applicable options depend on jurisdiction and can change; a developer or player should check current local requirements rather than assume an option available in one market is available everywhere.

What could shape gaming in 2026?
Two forces could influence player choices and industry growth: hardware affordability and continuing demand for games and services.
Hardware costs may affect upgrade decisions
Circana flags rising RAM, GPU, CPU and storage costs as a risk to affordability. Its outlook says some players may rely on devices they already own, or consider PC, mobile or cloud options when new hardware feels too expensive. That is an industry forecast, not a measured account of what all players will do.
U.S. spending is forecast to rise
Circana forecasts U.S. video-game industry spending of $62.8 billion in 2026, 3% above its cited 2025 level. It points to the second year of Nintendo Switch 2 and anticipated software demand as contributors to U.S. momentum. This is Circana’s forecast, not a reported 2026 outcome; the forecast announcement gives its outlook.
How should you choose between devices and services?
There is no universal winner between mobile, PC, console and cloud. Start with the games you want and the devices you already have, then compare the trade-offs that matter to your play:
- Access cost: Separate hardware purchases from recurring subscription fees; an existing device may change the calculation.
- Game access: Check whether you buy games individually or use a service catalogue, and whether the titles you want are available in your region.
- Play conditions: Decide whether you prefer local processing or streamed play, and account for your network connection and sensitivity to latency.
- Portability and continuity: Check device support, cross-play and saved-progress options for the particular game.
- Social and creator features: Look for the multiplayer, cross-play or user-made content features you value.
- Platform constraints: Confirm local store rules, payment routes and geographic availability before relying on a distribution option.
The 2025 figures describe an uneven market, not a single trend affecting every country, game or player alike. For 2026, the clearest outlook is continued experimentation with access and monetization—alongside practical limits such as hardware cost, network quality, service catalogues and platform rules.
