A Poffin is a Buddy treat that you buy in the in-game Shop with PokéCoins. Feeding one fills your Buddy’s hunger meter, raises its mood to Excited, and, according to the Pokémon GO Help Center, automatically awards the maximum daily number of Affection hearts in the “Give your buddy a treat” category. Pokémon.com’s Buddy Adventure guide puts the treat comparison in numbers: one Poffin earns three treat hearts, while feeding three Berries earns one. The Excited mood also changes Candy distance and eligible activity hearts, but it does not touch Bonus hearts.
What a Poffin does
The Help Center’s Poffin article describes the treat as a special snack with four documented effects:

- It fills the Buddy’s hunger meter automatically.
- It raises the Buddy’s mood to Excited.
- It keeps the Buddy full, on the Map, and Excited for longer. The article does not give a length of time for any of these.
- It automatically awards the maximum daily treat-category hearts. In the Help Center’s words: “If you give your buddy a Poffin, you will automatically earn the maximum daily number of Affection hearts in the ‘Give your buddy a treat’ category.”
How Excited mood changes Buddy activity
Excited mood is the part of a Poffin feed that affects your walking and activity rewards. Two effects are documented, and they come from different sources with different levels of detail.
Candy walking distance is cut
The Pokémon.com Buddy Adventure guide says that while a Buddy is Excited, the walking distance needed for Buddy Candy is halved. The current Help Center Buddy Adventure page describes the same effect as a reduction in the walking distance needed for Candy, without stating a fraction. If you need the exact figure, the Pokémon.com guide is the only source reviewed here that gives one, and its publication date is not shown.

Eligible activities earn double hearts
The Pokémon.com guide says the player earns double hearts for the same tasks while the Buddy is Excited. The current Help Center page says Excited mood increases the hearts for eligible activities. The Help Center does not use the word “double,” so read “double” as the Pokémon.com description of that increase rather than as a separately confirmed multiplier.
Bonus hearts do not change
This is the exception most players miss. The Help Center’s Buddy Adventure page states: “Note: Reaching Excited Mood won’t increase the number of hearts in the Bonus category.” An Excited Buddy therefore does not double every heart category. It affects eligible activity hearts and Candy distance only.

Poffin versus Berries
The official comparison is in the treat category. One Poffin earns three treat hearts, and three Berries earn one. The table below sets out what the cited sources say about each item. Where a source is silent, the cell says so rather than assuming a result.
| Effect | One Poffin | Three Berries |
|---|---|---|
| Hunger meter | Filled automatically (Help Center) | Fills the hunger meter (Help Center Buddy Adventure page) |
| Buddy mood | Raised to Excited (Help Center) | Not stated in the cited sources |
| Treat-category hearts | 3 (Pokémon.com guide) | 1 (Pokémon.com guide) |
| Candy walking distance | Halved while Excited (Pokémon.com guide) | Not stated in the cited sources |
| Bonus-category hearts | No increase from Excited mood (Help Center) | Not stated in the cited sources |
| Cost | Bought in the Shop with PokéCoins; check the live Shop for current pricing (Help Center) | Not stated in the cited sources |
Berries and Poffins both fill hunger, but only the Poffin has a documented route to Excited mood and to the daily treat maximum. Be careful with the claim that a Poffin doubles everything. The documented doubling applies to eligible activities, not to Bonus hearts.

Getting Poffins
The Help Center’s Poffin article says Poffins can be purchased from the in-game Shop using PokéCoins. Shop prices and event offers change, so check the live Shop rather than relying on any figure in a guide, including this one.
The sources reviewed here do not establish a complete, current list of ways to get Poffins for free. If an event or task offers one, confirm it in the game at the time you plan to use it, because a route that existed earlier may no longer be available.

The Poké Ball Plus is an official accessory that counts distance for Buddy Candy when connected. Its official description does not say it changes Poffin effects, so it should not be treated as a way to get more out of a Poffin.

No official source reviewed here gives an exact length for a Poffin’s effects. The Help Center says the Buddy stays full, on the Map, and Excited “for longer,” but it does not quantify that period. Community posts give different durations, and they are not reliable enough to plan around.

Three timing rules are documented and can be used with confidence:
- Hunger depletes over time, so a full Buddy will not stay full indefinitely.
- Activity hearts reset at midnight local time, according to the Help Center Buddy Adventure page.
- The daily treat maximum is awarded per feed as described in the Poffin article, so it refreshes with the daily activity counter, not with the Buddy’s mood.
Because the duration is not quantified, the practical approach is to feed the Poffin when you are about to walk, and to check the Buddy’s mood and hunger meter once you have started, rather than counting on a specific window.
When a Poffin is worth using
Use this checklist to decide between a Poffin and Berries for a given feed:
- Choose a Poffin when your treat-category hearts for the day are short of the maximum and you want to reach it in one feed. The Help Center documents this as the Poffin’s automatic reward.
- Choose a Poffin when you plan a walking session and want the Excited effects on Candy distance and eligible hearts.
- Choose Berries when you only need to fill the hunger meter. The cited sources do not show Berries producing Excited mood, so do not expect that effect from them.
- Do not expect a Poffin to raise Bonus-category hearts, whatever the Buddy’s mood.
Poffins are most useful when they replace several small feeds with one that delivers the daily treat maximum and the Excited window in a single action.
