AFK stands for “Away From Keyboard.” In games, it describes a player who is temporarily absent or not taking part while still connected to a match. The word is used for players on consoles and mobile devices as well as PCs, and whether an AFK player is penalized depends on the specific game’s rules, not on the term itself.
What AFK stands for
The abbreviation expands to “Away From Keyboard.” Xbox Wire’s PC gaming glossary lists it among gaming acronyms, and Electronic Arts’ Apex Legends glossary defines it compactly as “When a player is away from their keyboard.” (Xbox Wire, July 23, 2015; EA Help, Apex Legends terms guide.)
How the term is used today
The phrase began with keyboard-and-mouse play, but its meaning has widened. Riot’s Wild Rift support article describes AFK as leaving a computer, console, or mobile device during an online match without quitting. VALORANT’s support material goes further: a player can be treated as AFK when not at the computer, or when behaving as though absent by not moving or communicating. In practice, then, “AFK” describes a state of non-participation rather than a literal hand-off from the keyboard.
Announcing a break versus calling out a teammate
The word is used in two quite different ways. A player who types “AFK for a minute” before stepping away is giving teammates a warning. A player who says a teammate “is AFK” is reporting that someone is not helping in a live match. The label alone does not show why a player is absent, whether the absence was intended, or whether the game’s detection system will flag it. A player who is actually in the chair but has not moved or spoken for a long stretch can still be read as AFK by others.

Idling is not always the same as automation
Some games separate standing idle from playing through a bot or script. ArenaNet’s Guild Wars 2 policy allows a character to idle in a city or open world, provided it does not act, take part in content, or otherwise engage with the world while the player is away. The same policy prohibits unattended gameplay, including automated farming. The official wording is: “Note that this does not mean that you cannot be away from your computer (AFK) while you are online.” (ArenaNet Support, Policy: Unattended Gameplay.)
This split matters because a player who is simply away from the keyboard in an open-world game may be within policy, while a character that keeps completing tasks with nobody at the controls is not. Treat the distinction as specific to Guild Wars 2 until you have checked another game’s policy.

Penalties differ by game
There is no single consequence for going AFK. The two Riot Games support pages below show how different the outcomes can be, and the figures should be read as policy details for those games and those dates, not as an industry standard.
| Game and source | What counts as AFK | Consequence cited | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wild Rift, Riot Games Support “AFK and Leaving” article dated February 28, 2025 | Leaving a computer, console, or mobile device during an online match without quitting | A 150-second queue delay for five matches; repeated incidents extend the number of affected matches | Matchmade queues, including ARAM and CO-OP VS AI |
| VALORANT, Riot Games Support Penalties and Bans FAQ (no date stated in the cited material) | Not at the computer, or behaving as absent by not moving or communicating | Warnings, denial of match XP for one match, and a competitive Rank Rating deduction of 6–24 points for one match | Penalties are based on the offense and the player’s behavior history |
| Guild Wars 2, ArenaNet unattended gameplay policy | Idling is allowed when the character does not act or engage; unattended automated play is prohibited | Not stated in the policy text reviewed | Cities and open-world idling versus unattended gameplay |
Wild Rift
Under Wild Rift’s policy, a queue delay applies after AFK or leaving behavior. The support article applies the rule to matchmade queues, so a player who leaves an ARAM or CO-OP VS AI match faces the same mechanism as in ranked play. Because the penalty is a queue delay rather than a loss of rank, its impact is felt mostly in the time before the next match. (Riot Games Support, AFK and Leaving (Wild Rift).)

VALORANT
VALORANT’s penalties are graduated. A first offense may produce a warning, while later incidents can lead to lost match XP or a Rank Rating deduction. The support page says penalties depend on the offense and on the player’s behavior history, so the same absence can be treated differently for different players. Because penalty rules can change, check the current page before relying on specific numbers. (Riot Games Support, Penalties and Bans FAQ (VALORANT).)
Team expectations and mode
In a team match, one absent player leaves the others short-handed, which is why AFK is treated as a team problem rather than a private one. Riot’s VALORANT support page says AFK behavior damages the team’s chance of winning. Riot’s Community Pact defines the term as “Being ‘away from keyboard’ when you should be playing,” and sets an expectation that players give their best effort in most queues. (Riot Games, Community Pact.)

- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button

The same pact frames casual custom games differently. An informal game can tolerate a player stepping away when everyone agrees to that, but the exception depends on all players sharing the expectation. In a ranked or matchmade queue, you should assume the normal expectation applies.
What to do when you need to step away
- Say so in chat first. A short “AFK for one minute” gives teammates a reason for the silence.
- Use the game’s own options. Leaving a match counts toward the same penalty mechanisms as going AFK in Wild Rift, so do not simply close the client.
- Check the game’s support page. Penalty rules, queue delays, and idling policies differ by title and change over time.
- Do not automate. In Guild Wars 2, unattended automated play is a separate prohibited activity, even when the character appears to be doing something useful.
Limits of the available evidence
The figures above come from individual publisher policies, not from studies of how often players go AFK. No public prevalence statistic for AFK behavior was found in the sources reviewed. The quotations are organization-authored policy wording rather than statements from named individuals.
