WWE Brawl was a planned four-player arcade-style fighting game, but it was cancelled before release. WWE hosts surviving gameplay footage and published a retrospective about the project in 2016; those sources do not establish that a new leak has surfaced in 2026.
What was WWE Brawl?
WWE and THQ began work on WWE Brawl in 2009, after WWE Legends of WrestleMania. WWE described it as part of an effort to complement the simulation-focused SmackDown vs. Raw series with a more arcade-like take on wrestling. THQ assigned development to its Australian studio, Blue Tongue Entertainment. The planned game supported four players and took WWE fights beyond the traditional ring. WWE says it was never released. How would the game have played?
Brawl drew on platform fighters such as Super Smash Bros. and on the environmental combat of Sega Dreamcast’s Power Stone. Its setting, Brawl City, was a wrestling-themed metropolis made up of interactive venues rather than a series of conventional rings.
Destructible venues and improvised weapons
Environments were designed to break apart during fights, with ordinary objects—including lamps and traffic cones—available as weapons. “The environments would have to act as rings without being your stereotypical ring,” said Stephen Rushbrook, a senior environment artist who worked on the game, speaking to WWE.com via email. Artist Drew Morrow described the intended action this way: “It was all going to be fast, very destructive.”

Cartoon-styled WWE characters
The wrestlers were to have stylized identities tied to their personas: John Cena was imagined as a mechanic with a garage, The Miz as a Hollywood mogul and Triple H as a monarch. WWE’s retrospective says the team created original animation for each wrestler’s body type and persona rather than relying on motion capture or ragdoll physics. Planned character-specific weapons and abilities included Cena’s chains, Triple H’s sledgehammer and Kane’s association with fire.
“At the start of it, I really wanted to make it look almost like a cartoon had come to life,” Morrow said of the concept art. The story was still evolving when production stopped: WWE described a loose, Street Fighter-like plot involving fictionalized WWE personalities and a conspiracy.

Why was WWE Brawl cancelled?
Production ceased in 2012, about three years after work began in earnest and a year after the project was publicly introduced at the WWE Global Business Partners Summit. WWE does not identify one definitive cause. Its retrospective points to bad timing, an unsteady global economy and the difficulty of making a game at this scale as contributing factors.
People with direct knowledge of the project estimated that it was six months to a year from completion when work ended, according to WWE. That estimate is not evidence that a finished or near-final retail version existed. Animator Chris Burns, who worked on Brawl, told WWE.com: “It was a shame that it never saw the light of day.”

Can I watch WWE Brawl gameplay footage?
Yes. WWE hosts a playlist of gameplay videos for the cancelled game, including a page titled “Cancelled WWE Brawl video gameplay: Rey Mysterio vs. R-Truth.” WWE’s 2016 retrospective also included screenshots it described as never-before-seen at the time. That history explains why footage may circulate online, but it does not verify a newly leaked clip in 2026.

No released game is established by WWE’s account: the company says Brawl was never released. The footage is evidence of a project in development, not a playable retail release or a game available to buy.
