The Daemonculaba is a fictional Iron Warriors system for producing Chaos Space Marines from captured gene-seed. In Graham McNeill’s Dead Sky, Black Sun, Warsmith Honsou’s attempt is brutally unreliable: many candidates die, while survivors may become the mutated beings known as the Unfleshed. Spoilers for the novel follow.
What is the Daemonculaba?
In Warhammer 40,000 lore, the Daemonculaba is a grotesque genetic-production apparatus created by Honsou, an Iron Warriors Warsmith. It is intended to turn captured gene-seed into new Iron Warriors Chaos Space Marines. It is a fictional body-horror concept, not a real technology or procedure.
The idea is not a dependable shortcut to building an army. The account of the events says many candidates do not survive the process; those who do can be left horribly mutated.
What happens to the candidates?
The survivors are called the Unfleshed. Their existence reflects the failure of Honsou’s process to produce ordinary Space Marines reliably: survival comes at the cost of severe bodily mutation.

- Everything you need to get started with playing games in the grim darkness of the far future
- A softback, portable A5 book
The account of the novel identifies the prologue with the creation of the apparatus and use of gene-seed, chapter 6 with failed candidates and the Unfleshed, chapter 16 with Uriel Ventris’s infiltration, and chapters 21–22 with the apparatus’s destruction. These chapter references are a guide to where the events are placed, not quotations from the novel.
How are Honsou and Uriel Ventris involved?
Honsou builds the Daemonculaba as part of his effort to create more Iron Warriors. Uriel Ventris, the Ultramarines protagonist, leads the effort that ultimately destroys it. The plot is therefore not simply about the machine: it is part of the conflict between Honsou and Ventris in Dead Sky, Black Sun.

Which book tells the Daemonculaba story?
The Daemonculaba events are attributed to Graham McNeill’s Dead Sky, Black Sun. The novel is a later Honsou story, distinct from Storm of Iron, which introduced Honsou and begins the Iron Warriors series.
| Book | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Storm of Iron | Black Library describes it as a siege story set at Hydra Cordatus; it introduced Honsou. Warhammer Community calls it the first book in the Iron Warriors series and says that series runs parallel to the Uriel Ventris stories. The novel was originally released in 2002, according to a 27 September 2023 Warhammer Community article. |
| Dead Sky, Black Sun | The novel identified for the Daemonculaba, the Unfleshed, and Ventris’s effort to destroy the apparatus. |
