Spike Chunsoft identifies him as a robotic bear and the self-proclaimed headmaster of the killing game; the explicit male label in the sources consulted comes from a fan-maintained reference.
What do official Danganronpa sources say about Monokuma?
Spike Chunsoft describes Monokuma as “a strange, murderous little bear” in its Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc summary. The franchise’s official series page calls him “a demented robotic bear” and identifies him as the character who claims to be the school’s headmaster. These descriptions establish his form and role, but neither explicitly says that he is male or female.
Why is Monokuma usually called male?
The Danganronpa Wiki, a fan-maintained reference, lists Monokuma’s gender as male. That supports the common reference classification, but it is not the same as an explicit statement from the publisher or creators.
A PlayStation Blog interview with series writer Kazutaka Kodaka is available, but its surfaced description does not provide a direct answer from him about Monokuma’s gender. It therefore does not settle the question.

Is Monokuma canonically male or female?
The careful answer is that Monokuma is generally treated as male, while the official descriptions cited here do not formally specify his sex or gender. Calling him a girl is not supported by those descriptions; calling him male reflects the fan-reference classification rather than a direct official gender statement.
