Spoilers for the Until Dawn remake’s post-credits scenes. The scenes reported in October 2024 focused on Josh and Sam, and looked like possible sequel teases. They were not confirmation at the time. PlayStation has since officially announced Until Dawn 2 for PS5 in 2027—but describes it as a standalone story with a new cast, so the announced sequel is not confirmed as a continuation of those characters’ stories.
What happens in the remake’s reported new ending?
October 2024 reports on leaked footage described two post-credits scenes, one involving Josh and another involving Sam. These are leak-era descriptions, not an official explanation from the developers of what the scenes mean.

Josh remains alive—and haunted
GameSpot reported that Josh survives in a third possible fate: badly injured after an encounter with a creature, still human, and apparently haunted by Dr. Hill’s voice. The scene suggests the possibility of redemption, but it does not establish what will happen to Josh next. GameSpot’s October 3, 2024 report and Push Square’s account from the same day both described Josh as still human and trapped in the mines.
Sam wakes with a mysterious wound
The reports place Sam years later in Los Angeles, apparently taking heavy medication. A book about creature myths is by her bed; she wakes with a fresh wound and hears an eerie voice. Those details invite questions about the consequences of the original story, but the reported scene does not identify who or what caused the wound.

Did the ending confirm an Until Dawn sequel?
No. When the footage was reported in October 2024, the scenes were interpreted as possible sequel setup, but neither report established that a sequel was in development or that these scenes were intended to announce one. Push Square explicitly cautioned that the leaked clip was not confirmation.
The distinction matters: the reported scenes suggest directions the story could take, especially for Josh and Sam, but they do not prove either character will return. Nor do the sources establish that the scenes directly led to the later sequel announcement.

What has PlayStation confirmed about Until Dawn 2?
PlayStation has since announced Until Dawn 2 for PS5 in 2027. The official announcement calls it a standalone experience with a brand-new cast and world. Its premise follows a crew behind a popular paranormal channel: after they are sent to an abandoned tropical island, their staged scares become real. Dr. Hill returns, again played by Peter Stormare. PlayStation’s official announcement does not say the new game continues Josh and Sam’s stories.
Stu Tilley, Creative Director at Firesprite, described it as “a standalone experience, featuring a brand new cast, a whole new world to explore, and true to form, a modern horror experience packed with intrigue, emotion, twists, and the kind of choices that will keep you up at night.”

How the remake relates to the original Until Dawn
The remake rebuilds and enhances the original game rather than presenting the announced sequel’s story. PlayStation announced it for PS5 and PC on January 31, 2024, noting its Unreal Engine 5 rebuild, third-person camera, improved animations and visuals, new or enhanced locations and interactions, and a new score by Mark Korven.
