Gwyn at his peak is the strongest candidate in Dark Souls lore if strength means primordial stature and power to shape the world. That is an interpretation, not a confirmed ranking: the games do not establish a definitive strongest character or a universal way to compare different kinds of power.
What the lore establishes about the first Lord Souls
The opening account describes four beings who found Lord Souls: Gwyn, Gravelord Nito, the Witch of Izalith, and the Furtive Pygmy. It establishes their foundational place in the world’s history, but it does not rank them against one another. Gwyn is the best-supported answer because his soul text connects him directly to the First Flame and describes the scale of his power even after his sacrifice.
The comparison is necessarily qualitative. A role in shaping the world or its eras is not the same thing as proof of winning a duel, and the lore offers no common measure that converts the First Flame, death, chaos, or the Abyss into a single strength scale.
Why Gwyn at his peak is the strongest candidate
The description of the Soul of Gwyn says: “Lord Gwyn bequeathed most of his power to the Gods, and burned as cinder for the First Flame, but even so, Lord Gwyn’s soul is a powerful thing indeed.” The text supports two points: Gwyn gave away most of his power and burned to sustain the First Flame, yet his remaining soul is still called powerful. That makes his peak a stronger candidate than the diminished figure encountered at the end of the first game.

Peak Gwyn is not the final boss Gwyn
The Gwyn fought as Lord of Cinder has already made the sacrifice described in his soul text. That encounter is not a direct demonstration of his full strength before linking the First Flame. Treating the boss fight as a complete measure of peak Gwyn would ignore the lore’s account of what he gave up.
How Manus compares
Manus is a strong alternative if the question is specifically about dark or Abyss-related power. His soul description says: “Ancient Manus was clearly once human. But he became the Father of the Abyss after his humanity went wild, eternally seeking his precious broken pendant.” This identifies a transformation tied to humanity and the Abyss, a different domain from Gwyn’s association with the First Flame. The text does not establish a universal scale for comparing them, or say that Manus outranks Gwyn.

The idea that Manus is the Furtive Pygmy is a fan theory, not a confirmed identity. The available descriptions establish that Manus was once human; they do not establish that he was the Pygmy.

Where to explore the lore in-game
Bandai Namco lists Dark Souls Trilogy as including all three games, their DLC, and soundtracks. For the first game specifically, the publisher’s Dark Souls Remastered page identifies the edition with Artorias of the Abyss content.
