Yes—you can use Wabbajack without Nexus Mods Premium. Wabbajack itself is free, but without Premium you should expect to fetch some Nexus mods manually rather than having every file download automatically. That means more hands-on work and potentially slower progress, not a blanket guarantee that every modlist will install the same way.
What Premium does—and does not—require
Wabbajack describes its installer as free and open source. Nexus Premium is not a general fee for using Wabbajack. The distinction is file retrieval: Wabbajack uses the Nexus API for automatic downloads, and its official support guidance says that API access for automatic downloads is available only to Premium members. Wabbajack also states that the API limitation is imposed by Nexus Mods and cannot be changed or circumvented by Wabbajack. Wabbajack’s installation support guidance explains the restriction.
How to install a list without Premium
Without Premium, the practical alternative is to download missing Nexus files yourself and place them in the modlist’s downloads folder. Wabbajack cannot bypass Nexus access or download restrictions; you still need to obtain each required file through the options Nexus makes available to your account.
- Choose the modlist and read its README. Wabbajack opens the list’s README when you select a list. Use it for that list’s installation instructions, configuration, play guidance, and any prerequisites or troubleshooting steps. Requirements differ by list, so do not assume another list’s instructions apply.
- Start the Wabbajack installation. If a required Nexus download cannot be retrieved automatically, follow the installer’s prompt or the list’s README to identify the missing file.
- Download the missing file manually. Use the corresponding Nexus page and download option available to your account. Do not substitute a different file or version unless the list’s documentation says to.
- Put the file in the list’s downloads folder. Use the folder configured for that modlist, then let Wabbajack resume or retry the installation as directed by its prompt or README.
This route trades convenience for effort: you may need to repeat the manual step for multiple files. The exact number and handling of missing downloads depend on the list and the files it requires.

How much slower can non-Premium downloads be?
Nexus Mods’ Site Help page, last updated April 7, 2026, publishes approximate speed caps for regular users: about 1.5 MB/s when using an ad blocker and about 3 MB/s without one. The page also puts recognized mod authors and Supporters in the group with the approximately 3 MB/s cap, and says the non-Premium speed allowance is shared across files downloading simultaneously. These are Nexus’s published approximate caps, not independent measurements or a promise of the speed you will see. See Nexus Mods’ download speed cap guidance.
Actual throughput can be lower. Nexus notes that ISP limits, distance from its servers, infrastructure, VPNs, antivirus software, and other factors can affect download speeds. Premium removes Nexus’s speed restriction, but “uncapped” does not guarantee a faster connection in every situation. Nexus’s Premium benefits page explains that distinction.

Is Premium worth it for a Wabbajack install?
Premium is the paid convenience option if you value automatic retrieval and faster, less hands-on downloading. Going without it avoids that membership cost but means manually downloading missing mods and working within Nexus’s published non-Premium limits. There is no universal break-even point: the trade-off depends on the list’s size, your connection, and how much you value automation. The sources do not establish a single installation-time or cost calculation that applies to every user.
Also check the specific list’s README before deciding. A list author may set requirements for that list’s own automated process. For example, the Mad God’s Overhaul guide edited in 2026 lists Nexus Premium as mandatory for its process; that is a list-specific condition, not a general Wabbajack rule.
