“Prepaid card” can mean two different things on Steam: a Steam Wallet Code that adds funds to your Wallet, or a bank- or payment-company-issued prepaid card used at checkout. Wallet Codes are redeemed separately and must match your Wallet’s currency; payment cards depend on issuer registration and Steam’s checkout rules. Neither type can be used to change your Steam store country.
First, identify which kind of prepaid card you have

How to redeem a Steam Wallet Code
- Sign in to Steam and open Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code.
- Enter the unique code in the Steam Wallet Code field and continue to add its value to your Wallet.
- Check that the code’s currency matches your Steam Wallet currency. Steam Wallet Codes cannot change your account’s store country.
If the code is rejected, check characters that could be mistaken for one another. If you just bought it, allow several hours for the retailer’s activation process. If it still does not work, contact Steam Support and provide the card and matching receipt.

Why Steam store country and currency matter
Your Steam store country should reflect where you currently live. If you move, Steam says you can update the country during a purchase using a payment method from that country; country changes are limited to once every three months. Wallet Codes and CD keys do not change the store country. See Steam’s Store Country guidance.
If you are traveling and see a Wallet-currency mismatch error, Steam suggests trying the payment instrument by itself, without Wallet funds. Also check that you are not viewing a store page for a different region. Steam says purchases through a proxy or VPN to another region are declined; do not use these tools or mismatched-region codes to bypass regional rules. If your country or currency situation is unclear, contact Steam Support.

Using a prepaid bank card at checkout
Steam says most prepaid gift cards need to be registered with their issuer before they can be used online. Follow the issuer’s instructions, which are often printed on the card, and enter the card and billing details as required by the checkout. A Steam Wallet Code is not entered as a bank card, and a bank-issued prepaid card is not redeemed in the Wallet Code field.
A failed payment can leave a temporary authorization hold. Steam says release timing can take up to 30 days depending on the issuer and its processes; this is not a guarantee that every hold will clear within that period. Check with the issuer if a pending hold remains.

What to know about physical and digital Steam gift cards
Steam’s Wallet FAQ says retail Steam Gift Cards are being phased out and will not be restocked as stores sell through their stock. Steam expected retailers to run out by the end of 2026, but that forecast does not establish availability at any particular shop. Existing physical cards remain usable on Steam subject to local laws. Steam Wallet gift cards can only be redeemed on Steam; they are not a way to pay taxes, bail, debts, or fees, or to collect a prize. Steam Support warns, “Never give out a Steam Wallet Gift Card to a person you do not know.” Treat requests from strangers to buy cards and send them codes or photos as likely scams. If you bought and activated a card but have not given it to a scammer, keep the card and receipt and ask the retailer whether it is eligible for a refund. Steam says the retailer may be able to check; a refund is not assured.
