VILE: Exhumed was removed from Steam days after its planned release, but the reported reason was Valve’s existing rule on sexual content depicting real people—not the separate payment-processor policy at the center of Steam’s wider moderation controversy. Calling the game an “unjust casualty” is an editorial judgment; the available reporting supports the removal and the competing explanations, not a definitive verdict on its fairness.
Why was VILE: Exhumed removed from Steam?
Independent horror game VILE: Exhumed, developed by Cara Cadaver, was scheduled to arrive on Steam on July 22, 2025. SteamDB records its store page being taken down on July 25. In an August 5, 2025 report, PC Gamer said Valve confirmed the removal was related to its pre-existing rule concerning sexual content depicting real people. PC Gamer’s report on the removal
The developer disputed the implication that the game contained explicit sexual material. Cara Cadaver told WIRED that the relevant content was implied, writing: “Vile: Exhumed was not banned for its use of gore in storytelling, or violent themes. It was banned for ‘sexual content with depictions of real people,’ which, if you played it, you know is all implied, making this all feel even worse.” Publisher DreadXP said the game had no uncensored nudity, sex acts, or pornography. These are the developer’s and publisher’s descriptions, rather than an independent audit of the game’s content. WIRED’s reporting on the dispute
Was the removal caused by payment processors?
Not according to the game-specific explanation reported by PC Gamer. Valve’s separate July 2025 statement described a broader group of games that might violate rules or standards set by payment processors, card networks, or banks. Valve said it was removing those games from sale because losing payment methods could prevent customers from purchasing other Steam content. Its statement did not name VILE: Exhumed. PC Gamer subsequently reported the game’s removal under the existing rule about sexual content depicting real people. PC Gamer’s report quoting Valve’s payment-processor statement

The two policy threads unfolded in the same period and both concerned what could be sold on Steam, but they should not be collapsed into one cause. The reporting connects this game’s removal to Valve’s existing content rule; it does not establish that the payment-processor warning triggered this particular decision.
What does “censorship campaign” describe here?
The phrase captures the article’s critical framing of a wider dispute, not a settled legal or factual classification. WIRED reported on advocacy pressure from Collective Shout, actions by platforms and payment providers, and statements from the International Game Developers Association and Itch.io. It also described developers’ difficulty understanding some removals and indexing decisions. That context explains why the removal became part of a broader debate, but it does not prove that every platform decision had the same cause.

IGDA executive director Jakin Vela told WIRED: “The right to make mature games with legal adult content is a creative right, just like the right to tell stories about war, death, or love.” That is an industry advocate’s position on creative rights, not a statement of Valve policy.
Where can players get the game?
After the Steam takedown, VILE: Exhumed was reported as released for free as donationware under a Creative Commons license, with alternative downloads and an optional way to donate through the project site. PC Gamer reported that 50% of profits would go to Red Door Family Shelter in Toronto. That figure describes the reported donation arrangement, not a verified current total. The reporting does not establish where the game is hosted now, so check the project’s own channels for current availability rather than relying on an old download link. What Valve’s retirement documentation does—and does not—tell us
Valve’s Steamworks documentation says developers seeking to retire a product should contact Valve with background about the reason and timing. In Valve’s general retirement process, the store page is removed from listings while existing players retain the game in their libraries and can download, install, and launch it. That describes voluntary retirement guidance; it does not establish that this procedure was used for VILE: Exhumed or determine what access former Steam owners have in this case. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the “unjust casualty” argument is plausible—and still an argument
The case for calling the game an unjust casualty rests on the gap between the reported rule and the creators’ account: Valve’s stated category concerned sexual content depicting real people, while Cadaver said the material was implied and DreadXP denied that the game contained uncensored nudity, sex acts, or pornography. The broader controversy over payment networks and platform moderation adds to the concern that creators may face opaque limits on distribution.

But the available reporting does not independently establish the content at issue, disclose Valve’s full review, or show that the payment-processor policy caused this takedown. A careful conclusion is narrower: the removal illustrates a contested content decision made amid a wider moderation dispute, and the creators publicly challenged the rationale. Whether that makes the decision unjust depends on how one weighs platform rules, creative freedom, and the evidence about the game itself.
