Critics praised its inventive gravity-flipping platform design, retro style, soundtrack, and challenge; some also described it as short. Those scores and comments are platform-specific snapshots, not a single definitive rating for every edition.
What are the critic scores for VVVVVV?
The Metacritic PC page shows an 81/100 Metascore based on 15 critic reviews. Its 3DS page shows 83/100 based on 19 reviews. These are separate platform aggregates, so the two-point difference should not be treated as proof that one edition is better: the review counts and reviewed platforms differ. Metacritic’s PC critic-review page and Metacritic’s 3DS critic-review page provide the respective snapshots.
The PlayStation Store listing shows a separate user-rating snapshot of 4.62 out of 5 from 240 ratings. That is a storefront player rating, not a critic score, and should not be compared as if it were another Metascore. PlayStation Store listing.
What did critics like about VVVVVV?
The central idea is unusually easy to grasp: instead of jumping, Captain Viridian flips gravity to move between floor and ceiling. Steam’s official description calls it a platform game built around reversing gravity instead of jumping; Nintendo’s Switch listing describes using gravity inversion to cross rooms and solve puzzles. That mechanic gives the platforming its identity. The review excerpts collected on Metacritic praise the clever level design and the way the game tests players’ timing and navigation. The PC page includes a Destructoid excerpt calling it “Terry Cavanagh’s best game to date, and one of the best platformers I’ve ever played.” That is one outlet’s assessment, not a consensus quotation. Metacritic PC critic reviews.
Presentation is another recurring positive. Nintendo credits Swedish musician Magnus Palsson with the chiptune soundtrack, while the game’s visual approach draws on retro 2D platformers. The focused audiovisual style suits its room-by-room challenges rather than obscuring the gravity mechanic. Nintendo Switch listing.

What criticisms appear in the reviews?
Some critics characterize VVVVVV as short. A PC review excerpt also questions whether the price is justified by the game’s length. That is an individual outlet’s value judgment; it does not establish a universal view, and the cited material does not support treating it as a shared complaint across all platforms. Metacritic PC critic reviews.
The challenge is part of the game’s appeal, but it also means the experience is not necessarily a relaxed platforming stroll. Critics’ praise for demanding play should be read alongside the possibility that players looking for a long campaign may find the game brief.

Are the PC and 3DS reviews different?
The published aggregates are close, but they represent different sets of reviews. The PC snapshot is 81/100 from 15 critic reviews; the 3DS snapshot is 83/100 from 19. Metacritic’s score is a platform-specific aggregation, not a direct head-to-head test of versions, and the excerpts available are selective rather than a systematic tally of every critic’s comments.

Steam’s store tags identify its listed game as single-player, so multiplayer features should not be assumed to match across editions. Nintendo UK listing · Steam listing.
