VRChat is supported on Steam Deck through Proton, according to VRChat Support’s crash guide, updated June 16, 2025. If it keeps crashing, start with SteamOS updates and a restart, then check for Desktop Mode app conflicts. Work through the steps below one at a time and test VRChat after each; none is a guaranteed fix, and the right next step depends on whether the game fails at launch, freezes in a world, or crashes during a transition.
1. Update SteamOS, then restart
Install any available SteamOS updates and restart the Deck before changing VRChat-specific settings. Steam’s Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide recommends updates and a restart as initial checks for application instability, and applies to both LCD and OLED models.
After restarting, launch VRChat and see whether the same failure occurs. If it does, note when it happens—at startup, while entering a world, or later—before moving on.
2. Test without third-party Desktop Mode apps
Temporarily exit or disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode, then launch VRChat again. This is an isolation test: if the crash stops, re-enable apps one at a time to see whether the problem returns. A changed result does not by itself identify which app caused it.

3. Clear VRChat’s local profile data and content cache if it opens
If you can reach VRChat’s menus, open Quick Menu → Settings → Debug and select Clear Local Profile Data and Clear Content Cache. Restart VRChat and test again. These are the in-app cleanup options in VRChat’s official crash troubleshooting guide.
4. If it will not launch, follow the SteamOS manual cache procedure
VRChat’s automatic cache troubleshooting method is for Windows 10 and 11. The support guide directs Linux and SteamOS users to a manual procedure instead. Use the SteamOS/Proton instructions in that guide; do not paste its Windows command into the Deck or edit the Windows registry. The manual steps are more involved, so follow the guide as written rather than guessing at file paths or deleting unrelated data.

5. Verify VRChat’s installed files in Steam
VRChat includes Steam file verification among its troubleshooting steps. In Steam, open VRChat’s Properties, then use the installed-files or local-files section to verify the game files. Steam’s wording can vary by client version. Wait for verification to finish, then launch VRChat and check whether the original problem remains.
6. If crashes track a world or avatar, reduce content load
If VRChat is more likely to freeze or fail around a particular world or avatar, test with lighter content settings. VRChat Support notes that poorly optimized user-created worlds and avatars can contribute to performance problems; that does not establish them as the cause of every crash.

- Try a Medium avatar display threshold.
- Lower the maximum avatar download size.
These controls target content-related performance pressure. They may help identify or reduce a content-linked problem, but they are not a general cure for launch failures.
7. Save the output log and contact VRChat Support
If the crash persists, save the newest output log before launching VRChat again. VRChat’s crash guide describes how to escalate; its output log guide, updated May 29, 2025, says logs are retained for 24 hours and older logs are deleted when VRChat launches.

Send logs only through the official VRChat Support Form. Logs may contain personal information. In your report, say whether an error appeared, whether VRChat froze or exited by itself, whether audio continued or looped, what you were doing or which world you were in, and whether VRChat Beta is enabled. Include the steps that reliably reproduce the issue, if you have them.

There is no established Proton version that universally fixes VRChat crashes on Steam Deck. A VRChat Feedback user report dated April 2, 2026 described a freeze while switching worlds on Proton Experimental/Hotfix and said the reporter did not see that issue on Proton 9.0-4 and 8.0-5. That is one person’s report about a specific symptom, not an official recommendation or evidence that those versions fix startup crashes generally.
If your failure is specifically a world-transition freeze and you choose to test a different compatibility tool, change only VRChat’s per-game compatibility setting in Steam → VRChat → Properties, then retest and record the result. Restore the original setting if the change makes things worse. Do not treat the reported older versions as a default or current best choice.
How to choose the next step
- Deck-wide instability: prioritize SteamOS updates, restart, and the Desktop Mode app isolation test.
- VRChat will not open: use the SteamOS manual cache procedure and verify the Steam files.
- Only certain worlds, avatars, or transitions trigger trouble: try lighter content settings and record the exact activity for support.
VRChat names Steam Deck as supported through Proton; it does not make the same official support claim for other Linux distributions. If these checks do not resolve the issue, the saved log and a precise symptom description give VRChat Support the most useful starting point.
