VALORANT Patch 9.08 went live on October 22, 2024, at the start of Episode 9 Act III. Its Sunset changes reworked B Site and nearby areas to address site defensibility and post-plant pressure, with Riot saying the simplified cover should make retakes easier to manage. The “fans unhinged” angle came from selected pre-release reactions—not a measure of the player base as a whole.
What changed on Sunset in Patch 9.08?
Riot focused the update on B Site and its approaches. The official notes identify changes in B Main, B Main Exterior, B Site, B Site Back, B Boba, and Mid Courtyard. Riot said the B Main pivot box was creating too much pressure in post-plant situations, so it simplified cover and removed a particular Cypher trip.
Riot’s stated goal was to improve B Site’s defensibility and give players more ways to play on site. Its notes also say players could still use B Main after planting, but the situation should be easier for retakers to manage. Those are design intentions, not published measurements of how the map performed after the update.

Did Riot remove Cypher’s Sunset setup?
Riot said it removed a particular Cypher trip. That does not mean every Cypher setup on Sunset—or Cypher’s entire role on the map—was removed. Pre-release reactions included speculation that the change could hurt Cypher’s place on Sunset, but that was a prediction rather than a demonstrated post-patch result.
Did the changes make retakes easier?
Making retakes easier to manage was Riot’s stated aim: simplifying cover was meant to reduce the pressure created by the B Main pivot box during post-plant play. The available sources do not establish a measured competitive effect, such as a change in retake success, win rate, or agent pick rate. It is therefore accurate to describe the intended improvement, but not to claim that the patch proved retakes became easier in actual matches.

Why were fans described as “unhinged”?
A September 21, 2024, preview by Beebom reported mixed pre-release predictions. Some reactions doubted the B Site changes would solve the retake problem; others suggested Cypher could be hurt or attackers could benefit. These were selected reactions reported before the patch arrived, not a representative survey or a verified consensus among VALORANT players.
A Reddit discussion posted on release day had a search-result title expressing a positive individual impression of Sunset after 9.08. What else was included in Patch 9.08?
Sunset was the main map story, but Patch 9.08 also made agent changes, added a Team Deathmatch map, and rotated the competitive map pool. Riot’s notes list the following:
- Gekko: Globules remained in the world for 15 seconds instead of 20, and reclaim time increased from 1 second to 1.5 seconds. Riot also adjusted Dizzy’s active time and targeting reliability, and increased Thrash’s ultimate cost from seven points to eight.
- Yoru: Fakeout was updated to display interactions from several abilities more like a real agent.
- Team Deathmatch: Glitch was added as a 5v5 map.
- Competitive map rotation: Pearl and Split returned, while Icebox and Lotus were removed.
