To plant seeds in Valheim, equip a Cultivator, prepare the soil for ordinary crops, select the seed or crop in the planting menu, and place it where its biome, spacing, and open-sky requirements are met. If a plant will not grow, check its displayed status and fix the condition it names. Trees can be planted with the Cultivator without cultivated soil.
How to plant seeds in Valheim
- Get and equip a Cultivator. Farming guides identify it as the tool used to prepare soil and plant crops. One guide reports that it becomes craftable at a Forge after obtaining Bronze and Corewood; recipe and unlock details can vary with game updates, so check the current in-game recipe.
- Prepare a suitable patch. Use the Cultivator’s soil-preparation action. Ordinary food crops need cultivated ground; trees do not.
- Select the crop in the planting menu. Choose the seed or crop you want to plant, then place it in a biome compatible with that plant. Requirements vary: for example, the crop reference for Valheim 1.0.16 lists barley as a Plains crop.
- Leave room and keep the sky clear. Do not crowd plants or place them under roofs and other overhead structures. Plants need adequate space and unobstructed sky.
- Wait, harvest, and replant. Growth time depends on the crop. When a harvest produces seeds or other plantable material, replant some to expand your supply.
Where to plant each crop
Do not assume one farm location suits every seed. Check the crop’s biome requirement before preparing a large field. The Valheim Database crop table is labeled for version 1.0.16 and includes crop-specific biome, yield, spacing, and growth-time information: Valheim farming — every crop and sapling: seeds, grow time, biomes (1.0.16). It is a third-party reference, so confirm unusual or newly added crop rules in the game.
How to tell why a plant is not growing
Read the plant’s displayed status rather than guessing. The reported common problems are an incompatible environment, too little room, or blocked sky. Correct the condition named by the status, then give the plant time to grow.
- Wrong environment: Move the crop to a biome that supports it.
- Insufficient space: Give nearby plants more room.
- Blocked sky: Remove or avoid overhead structures above the plant.
How long crops take and what to do with harvests
Harvest timing varies by crop. A general farming guide estimates roughly two in-game days for a typical harvest, while the version-labeled crop reference gives individual growth-time ranges. Use the crop-specific value when planning a particular field rather than treating the general estimate as a rule for every plant.
Replanting seed-producing harvests is the basic way to increase your crop supply. Reserve part of a harvest for planting if you want to expand the field; use the rest for its food or crafting purpose.

What to remember before planting
- The Cultivator is the planting tool; the hoe is not identified by the cited farming guides as a substitute.
- Ordinary food crops need cultivated soil, but trees can be planted without it.
- Biome, spacing, and open sky all affect whether a plant grows.
- Growth time and harvest results are crop-specific; check a current crop table for the plant you are growing.
