If VALORANT freezes, stutters, or shows a black screen when you Alt+Tab, start with Riot’s Windows multitasking and display-setting checks—not a reinstall. Riot Games VALORANT Support says these issues are “often caused by how Windows handles multitasking and display settings.” That is a common explanation, not a diagnosis for every PC, and a brief display hitch does not by itself prove network desynchronization.
Start with Riot’s Windows Alt+Tab fixes
Riot’s dedicated troubleshooting article, published May 24, 2026, recommends adjusting how Windows handles Alt+Tab, turning off animations, and testing a VALORANT compatibility setting. Try these steps in order and check whether the symptom changes after each one.
1. Show only open windows in Alt+Tab
- Open Settings > System > Multitasking.
- Find the Alt+Tab section and set the option for what appears when you press Alt+Tab to Open windows only.
Riot says this can prevent Windows from loading background thumbnails that may cause in-game delays or stutters. Windows labels can differ by version; look for the Alt+Tab section if the wording is not identical.
2. Turn off Windows animations
In Windows Settings, open the accessibility options and turn off the animations listed under the Windows animation or “Simplify and personalize Windows” settings. Riot says reducing these animations may help with visual lag when switching between the game and desktop, particularly on mid-range systems. It is not a guarantee of lower in-game latency.

3. Test disabling fullscreen optimizations for VALORANT
- Right-click VALORANT.exe or the game’s desktop shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab and check Disable fullscreen optimizations.
- Select Apply, then OK, and test Alt+Tab again.
Riot notes that Windows fullscreen management can contribute to flicker or black screens during a switch. Display behavior varies by setup, so undo the setting if it makes your experience worse.
Check whether a low background FPS cap is adding latency
Open VALORANT’s video settings and inspect Limit FPS in Background. Riot’s Gameplay Consistency Update 2 explains that this setting throttles the game’s frame rate while it is in the background. When the background limit is low, refocusing after Alt+Tab can produce extra latency while the game recovers its buffers.

If the delay continues after you return to the game, test a less restrictive background limit and compare. Riot does not specify an ideal numeric value or say this explains every Alt+Tab report.

Riot’s refresh-rate and VSync guidance explains that refresh rate and FPS are different and covers VSync settings. Use it to verify display configuration, not as a universal Alt+Tab fix.

For ongoing gameplay trouble, Riot’s game and network instability guide provides context for client-performance and network signals. A visual hitch during a window switch alone is not enough to diagnose packet loss or server desynchronization.

Riot says a clean reinstall can sometimes help. Treat it as a later troubleshooting step rather than the first response to a switch-related freeze or stutter. If the issue remains after trying Riot’s steps, its Alt+Tab article directs players to submit a support ticket.
