Valve’s classic Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is available again as a separate, free-to-play Steam download. The listing is unlisted, so it will not appear in Steam search. Its return provides a separate way to install the legacy game; it does not mean Valve has restored CS:GO’s official matchmaking.
What Valve has brought back
Steam now has a separate listing for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (App ID 4465480), with Valve named as developer and publisher. The listing is free to play and offers a Play Game option. Because Valve marks it unlisted, searching the Steam store will not surface it; use the direct listing link to find it.

This is a digital Steam installation, not a physical release. Reporting on the change says CS:GO can be installed as its own title alongside Counter-Strike 2, rather than accessed through the older csgo_legacy branch. PC Gamer reported the separate listing on March 4, 2026, after SteamDB observed the change on March 3. PC Gamer’s report attributed the split to a quality-of-life change described by an unnamed Valve representative; Valve has not published an announcement explaining the relisting in the sources available.
How to download CS:GO again
- Open Valve’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Steam page directly. Store search will not find this unlisted listing.
- Sign in to Steam and select Play Game on the page.
- Follow Steam’s prompts to install and launch the separate CS:GO entry.
The listing supplies system requirements on its Steam page. It does not identify a required accessory or physical edition.

What you can play—and what has not returned
A separate download is not a restoration of CS:GO’s former official matchmaking service. Dot Esports, in a report updated August 4, 2026, says official matchmaking had not returned and describes play through bots and community servers. PC Gamer’s March 4, 2026 report likewise says matchmaking remained unavailable and points to joining community servers through the server browser. These are time-specific reports, not a guarantee of current server availability; the live state may change.
In practical terms, the listing makes it easier to launch the legacy client, but players should not expect the old official matchmaking queue. The cited coverage describes bots and community-hosted servers as the available ways to play. Dot Esports’ report covers the relisting and its matchmaking caveat.

Valve calls Counter-Strike 2 a free upgrade to CS:GO. Its store page says the upgrade launched September 27, 2023, and notes that reviews dated before then were for the legacy CS:GO version. Valve’s own framing still directs players looking for the latest Counter-Strike to CS2.

“Back” describes the availability of a distinct Steam listing and easier installation of the legacy client. It should not be read as a formal revival announcement or a return of official competitive service: the sources establish a store-page change and reporting about how the game can be played, not a broader relaunch plan.

- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
The CS:GO Steam page also retains historical store copy attributing a franchise sales claim to Valve’s Doug Lombardi: it says the franchise had sold “over 25 million units worldwide.” That is Valve’s historical statement, not a current sales total or a statistic about the 2026 listing.
