Valve released Dota 2 patch 7.36 on May 22, 2024, alongside Crownfall Act II. It introduced two broad hero systems—innate abilities and facets—and changed heroes in different ways. The headline shorthand that every hero got a new ability is misleading: the notes include a mix of new mechanics, adjustments, and hero-specific updates, not an equivalent new active spell for every character. Valve’s full 7.36 notes are the definitive list.
What changed in Dota 2 patch 7.36?
The update combined game-wide rules for hero innates and facets with a long list of hero-by-hero changes. Rather than giving every hero the same kind of new spell, Valve used the patch to add distinct systems and revise individual kits. The exact effect depends on the hero and, where applicable, the facet selected.
Valve announced the update on May 22, 2024, at the same time as Crownfall Act II. Its Steam announcement described it as a “massive new gameplay patch.”
What are innate abilities?
Innate abilities are a new hero-wide system in 7.36. Each hero has an innate ability, but the notes specify different behaviors: an innate may be available automatically or interact with a hero’s ability progression. Read the individual entry in the official notes rather than assuming every innate levels or works the same way.
#1 Best Overall
This distinction matters when interpreting the patch: an innate is not necessarily a newly added button or an active spell. Some changes affect how a hero works without adding an extra castable ability.
What are facets?
Facets are hero-specific choices that alter aspects of a hero’s abilities or play style. They add a choice between variations, rather than a single uniform upgrade shared across the roster. Their effect—and any trade-off between options—depends on the hero; consult that hero’s facet descriptions in the official 7.36 notes before drawing conclusions about a particular matchup or build.

How to read the hero-by-hero changes
The patch notes list system rules and a substantial set of individual hero entries. For any hero, separate three questions: what its innate does, what each facet changes, and what other adjustments the notes make. Not every listed change is a wholly new ability, and the roster did not receive one identical change apiece.
- Innate: Check its effect and how it relates to ability points or automatic progression.
- Facets: Compare the choices for that hero; do not assume the options are interchangeable or that one is universally better.
- Other changes: Look for adjustments to existing abilities or other hero-specific mechanics alongside the new systems.
Because the notes are extensive and each entry is specific, the official page is more reliable for an individual hero than a short roster-wide summary.

Does patch 7.36 describe Dota 2’s current balance?
No. Patch 7.36 is a dated release snapshot, not a guarantee of how the game works or is balanced now. Valve’s Steam announcement history records later 7.36a and 7.36b updates. A present-day build or balance recommendation should be checked against the applicable later patch notes, not inferred from the original 7.36 entry.
