What is Valor Mortis?
Valor Mortis is a first-person action Soulslike set in an alternate-history version of Napoleonic Europe. One More Level, the developer of Ghostrunner and Ghostrunner 2, is making the game. The studio’s official description identifies it as a first-person Soulslike, while the publisher describes its world as a supernatural retelling of the Napoleonic Wars. The premise combines war horror and body horror with fast, high-mobility combat. In an interview with Insider Gaming, One More Level CEO Szymon Bryła said the team moved away from cyberpunk to explore the Napoleonic period as horror: “That is why we changed the cyberpunk aesthetic to the period of the Napoleonic Wars in a horror version (including body horror).”
What is the story and setting?
You play as William Dowsett, a soldier in Napoleon’s Grande Armée who wakes after death with a supernatural plague in his body. The Empire’s conquest has stalled in occupied Eastern Europe as the plague spreads. William’s corruption gives him power, but also connects him to Napoleon, whose voice he hears, and to the resistance led by a figure known as The Shrike. How does Valor Mortis play?
The publisher’s September 30 gameplay overview describes combat built around stamina, light and heavy attacks, parries and counterattacks. You can adapt your weapon and abilities to the enemy rather than relying on a single attack style. Weapons and combat
- Claymore: A slow, high-impact two-handed blade.
- Musket: A two-handed firearm described as having greater range and power than William’s pistol.
- Parries and counterattacks: Defensive timing and follow-up strikes sit alongside light and heavy attacks, with stamina management shaping how you fight.
Transmutations
William can use supernatural Transmutations as well as conventional weapons. The publisher has described three examples:
- Fire can set enemies burning.
- Shield absorbs damage before releasing a shockwave.
- Grapple lets William traverse grapple points.
Exploration and progression
The publisher describes exploration as Metroidvania-style, alongside high-mobility combat. Progression centers on two resources:

- Catalysts are spent at Lanterns to improve health, stamina, parry and other stats. They are dropped at William’s death location.
- Ambers are found during the game and equipped at Lanterns as William levels up, letting you shape a build.
