Steam data gives Counter-Strike 2 a large, visible concurrent-player audience, and a selected early-2026 esports sample favored Counter-Strike over VALORANT. A 2025 playtime comparison across 37 markets also showed Counter-Strike 2/GO gaining while VALORANT declined. Those measures describe different things—concurrent Steam activity, time played, and tournament viewing—not a single global player count.
What does “more popular” mean?
There is no single public, apples-to-apples scoreboard that establishes which game has the larger total audience. Popularity can mean people playing at a particular moment, time spent playing over a year, or viewers watching tournaments. Each measure has a different scope, so the fairest answer is to compare them separately.
- Concurrent players count players active at the same time on a specified platform.
- Playtime measures time spent in a game, not how many unique people played it.
- Esports viewership measures audiences for selected competitions, not everyone who plays either game.
What Steam activity says about Counter-Strike 2
Valve’s Steam Charts lists Counter-Strike 2 among Steam’s most-played games and displays a live in-game count. It is a snapshot of activity on Steam, not a global total or a count of unique players.
SteamCharts’ Counter-Strike 2 history recorded an average of 1,069,173 concurrent Steam players in March 2026. Its page also showed a rolling 30-day average of 804,922 players. The first figure is for a calendar month; the second covers the 30 days in the page snapshot. Both are concurrent-player averages on Steam, not worldwide unique-player counts.

These figures make Counter-Strike 2’s Steam presence clear. They cannot be directly compared with a VALORANT global count: no equivalent public live figure for VALORANT was established for the same dates and on the same basis.
What tournament viewership says
In Esports Charts’ selected S-tier event sample from January through May 2026, Counter-Strike outpaced VALORANT on the audience measures reported, even though VALORANT had more broadcast hours.

The sample excludes Chinese platforms and Steam TV, and Esports Charts says it is not a complete ranking of overall title popularity. The broadcast-hour difference also matters when interpreting the totals: VALORANT had more hours of events in the sample, while Counter-Strike still led in the reported viewing metrics.
The tournament structures are not identical. Counter-Strike’s leading events are typically international third-party tournaments; VALORANT’s S-tier circuit is organized by Riot and divided among China, the Americas, EMEA, and Pacific. Differences in event selection and audience aggregation can affect comparisons, so this result applies to the sampled competitions—not every esports broadcast or every player.

What annual playtime says
Newzoo’s 2026 PC and Console Gaming Report compares 2025 playtime across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox in 37 markets, excluding China and India. It reports Counter-Strike 2/GO playtime up 2% year over year and VALORANT playtime down 15%. In the same report, Counter-Strike 2 accounted for 7.0% of yearly PC playtime in the covered markets.
These figures indicate a difference in playtime trend and share within Newzoo’s stated coverage. They do not show how many unique people played either title, and the regional exclusions mean they should not be treated as a worldwide result.

Does Twitch settle the comparison?
No. Twitch’s State of Gaming 2026 says more than 8.6 billion hours of gaming content were watched on Twitch between January 1 and September 1, 2026. That is platform-wide context, not a matched comparison of Counter-Strike and VALORANT.
The report also cites creator Kamet0, whose 13 million hours watched in 2026 so far were combined across League of Legends and VALORANT. That creator-specific, two-game figure is not title-wide VALORANT viewership, so it cannot establish which shooter is more popular overall.

So, which game is more popular?
Counter-Strike is ahead on the public Steam activity measure available here and on the selected January–May 2026 S-tier esports metrics. Newzoo’s 2025 playtime data also shows Counter-Strike 2/GO gaining year over year while VALORANT declined in its covered markets. Taken together, these sources support saying Counter-Strike leads on these particular measures—not that it definitively has more players worldwide.
A reliable global player-count verdict would require comparable active-user or concurrent-user figures for both games, measured over the same period and with the same definitions and coverage. The public figures cited here do not provide that comparison.
