The title refers to a December 5, 2023 report about Counter-Strike 2 game bans that Valve’s CS2 team was reportedly rolling back after a game update. The report did not establish that an NVIDIA driver update caused the bans, and it is not evidence of an active ban wave in October 2026.
What happened in the December 2023 CS2 ban wave?
HotHardware’s Nathan Ord reported on December 5, 2023, that players were receiving Counter-Strike 2 game bans and that the CS2 team said the bans were being rolled back after a game update. That account describes the incident as game bans, not VAC bans. The available reporting does not establish how many accounts were affected.
The report also recounted an earlier October 2023 incident involving AMD Radeon Anti-Lag+. It said the feature’s interaction with CS2 had triggered VAC bans. This is the report’s account of that earlier event; Valve’s policy explains how incorrectly issued VAC bans are handled, but does not independently confirm those incident details.
Was an NVIDIA driver update the cause?
No confirmed cause was established. The December 2023 report described NVIDIA graphics-driver updates as a theory, while noting that some players reporting bans did not have NVIDIA hardware or had not recently updated their drivers. The driver explanation should therefore be treated as speculation, not as a confirmed trigger.

How do VAC bans, CS2 game bans, and cooldowns differ?
The label shown on an account matters: these are distinct enforcement categories, and Valve describes different grounds and correction routes.
| Action | What Valve says it concerns | Correction route |
|---|---|---|
| VAC ban | VAC detects cheats installed on a user’s computer when the user connects to a VAC-secured server. Valve says it does not ban users based on player reports alone. | VAC bans are permanent and cannot be appealed or manually removed by Steam Support. If Valve determines a VAC ban was issued incorrectly, it is removed automatically. |
| CS2 game ban | The December 2023 report described the incident’s enforcement as game bans. It did not establish a complete list of reasons or effects for this category. | Valve says Support cannot remove or reduce CS2 penalties; an automated action determined to be incorrect is rolled back by Valve’s servers. |
| Competitive cooldown | Valve lists possible reasons including leaving or failing to participate in matches, excessive griefing reports, and VAC flags for irregular gameplay. | Valve says Support cannot remove or reduce the penalty; an automated action determined to be incorrect is rolled back by Valve’s servers. |
These categories should not be treated as interchangeable. A competitive cooldown, for example, is not itself a VAC ban.

What should you do if you think a CS2 penalty is mistaken?
- Read the exact account notice. Determine whether it identifies a VAC ban, a CS2 game ban, or a competitive cooldown; do not infer the category from a player’s profile or from reports about the 2023 incident.
- Use Valve’s published policy for that category. Valve says Steam Support will not manually remove or reduce these penalties. Its stated remedy for an automated action determined to be incorrect is automatic removal or rollback.
- Allow for an automatic correction if Valve determines the action was incorrect. Valve’s VAC support page states: “If a VAC ban is determined to have been issued incorrectly, it will automatically be removed.”
An account that appears ordinary to other players is not, by itself, evidence that an enforcement action was mistaken. The policy describes Valve’s correction process; it does not promise a particular review timeline.
