If VALORANT sounds clear in the lobby but turns muffled, quiet, or phone-call-like when a match or voice chat starts, check whether your audio device or headset microphone has switched modes. This is a useful lead—especially with Bluetooth headphones, which can switch to a lower-fidelity hands-free audio path when their microphone is active—but it is not the only possible cause.
First, identify what triggers the change
Notice whether the sound degrades when the match begins, when team or party voice chat is enabled, or specifically when the headset microphone becomes active. Also note whether the headset connects by Bluetooth, USB, wired analog, or a wireless dongle. The timing can point toward a device-mode change, but does not confirm one on its own.
With classic Bluetooth, high-quality playback commonly uses the A2DP profile, while microphone use can switch the connection to a hands-free voice profile with lower-fidelity, mono playback. Microsoft explains this profile tradeoff in its Bluetooth audio troubleshooting guidance. A similar symptom can also come from the wrong output device, game volume, or spatial-audio configuration.
Check VALORANT and Windows audio routing
- Check VALORANT’s sound settings. Make sure audio is enabled, relevant volume levels are above zero, and the output is set to the device you intend to use. Riot’s audio troubleshooting guide covers game output and volume checks.
- Check Windows output and the volume mixer. Select the intended playback device and confirm VALORANT is not muted or turned down in the mixer. Riot also recommends setting the headphones as the Windows default playback device.
- Test with exclusive control disabled. In the Windows sound settings for the playback device, turn off the option that allows applications to take exclusive control, if it is available. Treat this as a troubleshooting test, not a guaranteed fix.
If you use Bluetooth, test the microphone path
Riot’s Patch 8.0 notes describe a Bluetooth spatialization glitch encountered during its testing. Riot says turning off “Hands Free Telephony” solved that issue in its test, and warns that doing so disables the headphones’ built-in microphone. That is a targeted workaround for the documented glitch—not proof that every low-quality-in-match problem has the same cause. See Riot’s Patch 8.0 notes.

- WORKS WITH WINDOWS SONIC — Make the most of the headset’s powerful drivers by pairing it with lifelike surround sound that places audio with pinpoint accuracy, heightening in-game awareness and immersion
Try Riot’s Hands Free Telephony workaround
On the Windows path Riot documented, open Devices & Printers, find the headset, open Properties, then Services, and turn off Hands Free Telephony. Windows versions and device drivers may present these controls differently.
Because this disables the headset mic, check that you have another way to speak before using the workaround for team chat. You can test a separate microphone, such as a USB mic, and select it as VALORANT’s input device. This is a practical response to Riot’s stated microphone tradeoff, not a specific product recommendation. A wired headset is another general option that avoids Bluetooth headset profile switching.

Check Bluetooth LE Audio compatibility
Microsoft describes Bluetooth LE Audio support that can maintain stereo playback while a microphone is in use, but the feature depends on compatibility from both the Windows 11 PC and the headset. Owning a Bluetooth headset or updating Windows alone does not guarantee that stereo voice capability. Check both devices’ specifications and Windows support information before relying on it; Microsoft’s Bluetooth guidance discusses the relevant conditions.
Match VALORANT’s speaker setting to spatial audio
Riot says Stereo became VALORANT’s default speaker configuration with Patch 8.0. If you opt into Windows spatial audio, set VALORANT’s Speaker Configuration to Auto-Detect and enable spatial audio in Windows. If you want spatial processing off, disable it in Windows and set VALORANT to Stereo. Some headset utilities can apply spatialization outside Windows settings, so check the manufacturer’s software too.
