The idea is plausible because Valve is developing Arm-related compatibility technology and an Arm-based Steam Frame, while Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais has said Arm could suit a device around the Steam Deck’s performance level. Those are signs of interest, not a reveal of the next Deck’s design.
What did Valve say about Arm and Steam Deck 2?
In a December 3, 2025 interview reported by Tom’s Guide, Valve engineer and SteamOS architect Pierre-Loup Griffais described Arm as a possible fit for a device in the Steam Deck’s performance class. He said: “I think Arm devices are definitely a good fit for lower performance, like anything lower than Steam Deck. But it’s possible it’ll be a good option for something on the order of the Steam Deck performance envelope.”
The key phrase is “it’s possible.” Griffais was discussing a potential performance range, not confirming a Steam Deck 2 design. Valve has not announced the successor’s architecture, specifications, or release date in the cited coverage.
Why is an Arm-based Deck plausible?
Valve is working on compatibility for Arm
FEX is a translation project that can help run software written for x86 processors on Arm hardware. Proton addresses a different problem: it helps many Windows games run in SteamOS, Valve’s Linux-based operating system. Together, these technologies could make more PC games usable on Arm-based devices, but they do not guarantee that every Steam game will work or perform well.

Valve’s Arm-based Steam Frame project is further evidence that the company is working with Arm hardware. It does not establish that the headset is a prototype or stepping stone for a future Deck.
Valve has discussed a broader Arm gaming strategy
A June 30, 2026 report from PC Gamer described a separate interview about possible Steam Machine successors. Asked whether Arm was under consideration, Griffais reportedly replied, “Definitely, yeah,” and pointed to Valve’s FEX work and its aim to support a broad range of hardware. That comment concerns a wider hardware strategy; it is not confirmation of an Arm Steam Deck 2.

What could make Valve stay with AMD?
The current Steam Deck is AMD-based, and Valve has invested in the Linux graphics and driver support around that platform. An Arm transition would need to offer enough benefit to justify changing hardware and ensuring games work well across a different processor architecture.
Valve has also set a demanding target for a successor: a clear generational performance improvement without giving up the Deck’s battery-life envelope. In comments reported by Windows Central on May 4, 2026, Griffais said the company did not see then-available system-on-chips as delivering the next-generation performance Deck it wanted. That explains why chip options and timing matter; it does not identify the architecture Valve will choose.

What would decide between Arm and x86?
Any eventual choice would have to work across more than chip performance. These are the practical questions to watch, not established specifications for an unannounced product:
- Game compatibility: How reliably games built for x86 run through translation, and whether individual titles need extra fixes.
- Performance and battery life: Whether the complete system can deliver a meaningful performance step while meeting Valve’s battery-life goal.
- Cost and chip availability: Whether Valve can obtain suitable processors at a price and volume that work for a handheld.
- Graphics and drivers: How much of Valve’s existing Linux graphics and driver work can carry over to a different architecture.
Valve’s SteamOS overview describes SteamOS as Linux-based and explains Proton’s role in compatibility. Proton and FEX support different parts of the software stack; neither, by itself, settles how an Arm Deck would handle a particular game.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Could it be the first Arm-based PC gaming handheld?
It is a plausible possibility, but the available comments do not establish that Steam Deck 2 will be Arm-based—or support a definitive “first” claim. Windows Central’s Arm successor discussion is analysis of a possible direction, not a Valve product announcement. Until Valve identifies a device and its hardware, the architecture remains unknown.
What should Steam Deck owners take from this?
The Arm reports signal that Valve is exploring ways to broaden its hardware options and is building relevant compatibility capabilities. They do not establish when Steam Deck 2 will arrive, what chip it will use, or how well existing games would run on it. The existing Steam Deck OLED is a current-generation AMD-based model, not evidence of an Arm successor.
