Vambrace: Cold Soul is worth considering if you want a bleak fantasy story, striking art, and punishing expedition-based play. Its reception is mixed: Nintendo Life’s 2019 review of the Switch version praised the world and opening but scored it 4/10, while Steam’s user-review snapshot was more favorable at 65% positive. The main dividing line is whether the setting and narrative outweigh combat, navigation, and repetition concerns.
What kind of game is Vambrace: Cold Soul?
Developed by Devespresso Games and published by Headup, Vambrace: Cold Soul released on Steam on May 28, 2019. It is a story-driven roguelite set in a frozen landscape. You plan expeditions, assemble a party, and venture onto the cursed city surface, where traps, encounters, and combat threaten your progress. Nintendo’s description places the story in Icenaire, a city frozen by the King of Shades, whose dead have become Wraiths. Steam store page; Nintendo Switch listing.
What do reviews praise and criticize?
Nintendo Life’s Switch review
PJ O’Reilly’s Nintendo Life review, published August 28, 2019, awarded the European Switch eShop version 4/10. It singled out the art direction and world-building, and said the story made a strong opening impression. The review’s objections were substantial: combat felt dull and short on strategy, dungeons repetitive and difficult, and the map confusing. It also reported stuttering in the overhead hub. These are criticisms of that reviewed Switch version, not proof that every version performs identically. Read the Nintendo Life review.
Steam user reviews and other quoted scores
Steam’s indexed listing showed 65% positive from 694 user reviews in a 2026 search-result snapshot. That is a changing Steam user-review measure, not a critic aggregate or a permanent rating; check the live listing for the current figure. Steam also quotes TechRaptor calling it “what it means to be a roguelike in soul and spirit” and giving it 9/10, while OnlySP calls it “An exquisitely cruel adventure” and gives it 4/5. Those attributed blurbs suggest why players drawn to punishing roguelites may respond more positively than the Nintendo Life reviewer did. Steam store page.

Is Vambrace: Cold Soul hard?
Difficulty is a prominent part of the experience, not an incidental complaint: Nintendo Life found the dungeons difficult as well as repetitive, while the more enthusiastic Steam blurbs embrace the game’s cruelty. Expect expeditions where preparation, party choices, and careful navigation matter, rather than a breezy story game. If you enjoy learning through punishing runs and can tolerate opaque mapping, the challenge may be part of the appeal. If you want consistently clear routes or tactically varied fights, the review evidence points to reasons for caution.

Nintendo’s official US store listing labels its Switch version “Digital.” A 2019 post in a Nintendo Switch collector community reported a Gamefairy physical release, but that historical report does not establish current stock, edition contents, or availability from any retailer.
