The fix depends on whether the mod is missing, awaiting deployment, absent from the game, or present in-game without its expected effect.
First, identify what “not working” means
Installing a mod in Vortex and deploying it into a game are separate steps. If automatic deployment is disabled, a mod will not affect the game until you deploy it manually. Start with the stage that matches what you see:
- The mod is missing from Vortex: Check that you are viewing the intended game and that the download or installation completed.
- The mod is listed but disabled: Enable it, then check whether Vortex reports that deployment is needed.
- The mod is enabled but not deployed: Deploy it and look for an error or a request to resolve a problem.
- The mod is deployed but absent from the game: Check the game’s mod folder or plugin list, as applicable, and verify Vortex’s deployment setup.
- The mod appears in-game but has no effect: Check the mod’s requirements, installation instructions, and compatibility with your game edition and version.
Vortex’s FAQ explains that a mod will not affect the game if automatic deployment is off and the user has not deployed manually.
Check the game and deployment setup
Before changing folders or reinstalling anything, confirm Vortex is managing the game you actually launch. Then open Vortex’s Mods settings for that game and inspect the staging folder and selected deployment method. Deployment requirements vary by method and setup; the deployment guide lists the relevant folder and access requirements.

If you use hardlink deployment
Hardlink deployment requires the staging folder and game mod folder to be on the same partition, a supported filesystem, and read/write access to the relevant locations. If those conditions are not met, deployment may fail. Do not move folders or switch methods until you have checked where your current folders are and read the error Vortex displays.
For other deployment methods
Requirements differ by method. The deployment guide also describes move deployment, but its documentation labels that method experimental; verify current guidance for your Vortex version before relying on that label or choosing the method. The guide says the game should be initialized and its mods folder present for the documented deployment methods.

A deployment error is more useful than a generic “mods not working” diagnosis. Match its wording to the requirements for your selected method, and check Vortex’s current documentation before making broad changes to the game or staging folders.
If the Plugins tab is missing
A missing Plugins tab does not by itself mean Vortex is broken. The tab is available only for certain supported games, as described on the Vortex troubleshooting page. If you are using one of those games, the bundled “Gamebyro Plugin Management” extension may not have initialized.

- In Vortex, open Extensions and check the status of “Gamebyro Plugin Management.”
- If it is disabled, enable it and restart Vortex.
- If the tab is still missing, follow the troubleshooting page’s next steps: install Microsoft’s latest Visual C++ Redistributable x64, then investigate whether security software is blocking the module if the problem persists.
This is a targeted route for supported games and this particular missing-tab symptom—not a general fix for mods that fail to deploy or work in-game.
If deployment succeeds but the mod has no effect
Once Vortex reports successful deployment and the files or plugin appear where expected, focus on the mod and game setup rather than changing deployment settings at random. Check the mod’s own page and instructions for:
- Supported game edition and version.
- Required dependencies and any prerequisite mods.
- Whether an optional file is needed for your setup.
- Any specified launch method or other installation step.
Compatibility is specific to the mod, game, and setup; there is no single compatibility answer for an unspecified mod. For Skyrim Special Edition, Nexus Mods’ Mod Manager Fundamentals (Vortex) covers mod conflicts and plugin load order. That workflow is game-specific and should not be treated as a universal Vortex procedure.

The Vortex troubleshooting wiki page was edited April 30, 2024, and includes version-specific material, including references to older Vortex releases. A workaround such as downgrading Vortex, disabling updates, editing state files, or changing runtime requirements should not be applied unless it matches your current version and exact error. Check the current documentation for the version you use before following an older workaround.
