Official Pokédex and Pokémon Trading Card Game records use Onix, not Onyx. The reported misspellings are errors in particular media, not evidence that Pokémon changed the species’ standard name.
What spelling does Pokémon officially use?
The Pokémon Company International’s current Pokédex lists the species as Onix #0095. The official Pokémon Trading Card Game database likewise uses “Onix” in card names, including listings for EX FireRed & LeafGreen and Unified Minds. The official Unseen Forces checklist also spells the name “Onix.” These records establish the standard English spelling across official game-related references and card materials.
Did “Onyx” appear in Pokémon media?
Yes, according to the specialist reference Bulbapedia, which reports that a title card in the first U.S. airing of the anime episode “Hooked on Onix” showed “Onyx.” Its typo index also lists an “Onyx” error in a Trainer’s Choice segment. Those are reports of isolated display errors, not official adoption of a different species name. The cited first-airing title card has not been independently verified here, so the specific broadcast detail should be treated as Bulbapedia’s report rather than a confirmed archival finding. See Bulbapedia’s anime misprints reference.
Why is the spelling easy to mix up?
Onyx is the familiar modern English spelling of the gemstone. The word also has a documented historical English form, onix: the Online Etymology Dictionary records forms including Middle English “oneche” in the mid-13th century and “onix” around 1300. That history concerns the gemstone word, not the Pokémon’s naming history, and it does not establish why the character’s English name uses “i.” Online Etymology Dictionary: onyx.

Was the Pokémon renamed from Onyx to Onix?
The available official records do not support that claim. The current Pokédex and official card records consistently use “Onix,” while the “Onyx” examples are described as particular anime errors. Pokémon Support also says questions about origins, legends, or histories not already answered in official games, films, or television are left to fan interpretation; it does not provide an official explanation of the name’s spelling.
