It goes up to level III. It is not available in Bedrock Edition.
What the enchantment changes
A sword sweep is a separate attack mechanic from the enchantment. In Java Edition, a sword can sweep without Sweeping Edge. The enchantment only changes how much damage the sweep deals to nearby entities. It does not change the direct hit on the mob you attacked, so it is not the enchantment to pick if you want more damage on a single target.

That distinction matters when you are choosing enchantments. If your sword rarely hits groups, Sweeping Edge will do little for you. If you regularly fight several mobs in close range, it adds damage to every enemy caught in the sweep.
Which editions have it
Minecraft Help’s enchantment reference, titled “All Enchantments in Minecraft,” describes Sweeping Edge as increasing sweeping attack damage and lists it as available only in Java Edition, with a maximum level of 3.

Damage at each level
The Minecraft Wiki, a community-maintained reference, gives the scaling for each level. The sweep damage is calculated with this formula, rounded to the nearest integer:
Rank #2

- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.

1 + Attack_Damage × (level / (level + 1))
The wiki says the attack-damage value already includes Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods. Official Java 1.21 release notes describe the sweep-damage ratio as added to the base sweep damage of 1, which matches the general shape of this formula.
| Sweeping Edge level | Ratio in the formula | Sweep damage share reported by the wiki | Result at attack damage 8 (calculated) |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | 1/2 | 50% of sword attack damage | 1 + 4 = 5 |
| II | 2/3 | About 67% | 1 + 5.33, rounded to 6 |
| III | 3/4 | 75% | 1 + 6 = 7 |
The attack-damage value of 8 is only an example to show how the numbers work. Your actual sweep damage depends on your sword’s total attack damage at the moment of the hit.
Rank #3

When a sweep happens in Java Edition
The Minecraft Wiki describes the Java sweep conditions as follows. These details come from a community-maintained source and may change with future combat updates, so check them against the current version if you are playing a later release.
- The attack recharge meter must be at least 84.8%.
- The player must be on the ground.
- Movement must not be sprinting straight ahead.
- The sweep affects nearby entities around the mob that was directly hit.
Command and data names after Java 1.20.5
In Java 1.20.5, the internal identifier changed from minecraft:sweeping to minecraft:sweeping_edge. The 24w03a snapshot notes record the same rename. The name you see in the game remains Sweeping Edge, so this only matters if you use commands, data packs, or older guides that refer to the enchantment by its internal ID.
Rank #4
- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
For example, on Java 1.20.5 or later, the enchant command uses the new identifier:
/enchant @s minecraft:sweeping_edge 3
If an older tutorial uses minecraft:sweeping, update the name before using it on a newer Java version.
