Nintendo did not announce a blanket ban on Switch 2 auctions. On May 27, 2025, it said it was working with three Japanese marketplace operators to address improper listings that violate each service’s terms. Separately, HotHardware reported that Yahoo! Auctions temporarily prohibited Switch 2 console listings during the launch period. That was a reported platform measure at the time, not evidence of a universal or still-active ban.
What Nintendo announced
Nintendo’s May 27, 2025 announcement described cooperation with Mercari, LINE Yahoo, and Rakuten Group to address improper listings of Nintendo products, including Nintendo Switch 2. The measures included actively removing listings that violate the relevant services’ terms and sharing information. The announcement does not say that all Switch 2 auctions or all second-hand sales were prohibited. Nintendo’s announcement is in Japanese.

The marketplaces named
- Mercari
- Yahoo! Auctions and Yahoo! Flea Market, operated by LINE Yahoo
- Rakuten Rakuma
Nintendo described cooperation with the operators; it did not say every marketplace adopted the same restriction. The stated target was improper listings under each service’s rules, rather than resale as a category.
What was reported about Yahoo! Auctions
In May 2025, HotHardware separately reported that Yahoo! Auctions had temporarily prohibited Switch 2 console listings. HotHardware also reported seeing above-retail resale offers on eBay during the launch period. These are time-specific observations from a secondary report, not proof of current policy on either service. Read HotHardware’s report.

Why the measures drew attention before launch
Demand was unusually high in Japan before the console went on sale. Nintendo’s 2025 briefing reported 2.2 million applications for the My Nintendo Store preorder lottery over two weeks in Japan. That figure counts applications, not unique buyers or confirmed scalpers. Nintendo’s briefing provides the figure.
Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025. Nintendo reported more than 3.5 million units sold globally in the first four days after launch. Those launch figures help explain the pressure on availability and resale listings, but they do not establish how many listings were improper or what restrictions remain in place. Does the 2025 auction restriction still apply?
The cited announcements and reporting document launch-era actions; they do not establish whether Yahoo! Auctions or any other marketplace still restricts Switch 2 listings as of October 8, 2026. Rules can differ by marketplace and region, so check the relevant service’s current terms and listing notices before buying or posting. The available information also does not determine current retail stock or whether a particular resale listing is permitted.

What the headline gets wrong
- Not a blanket Nintendo auction ban: Nintendo announced cooperation to address listings that violate platform terms.
- Not one identical rule across all services: the announcement named marketplace operators and measures, while Yahoo! Auctions’ temporary listing prohibition was reported separately.
- Not proof of current policy: the reported restriction and resale observations date to the May 2025 launch period.
- Not a global marketplace policy: Nintendo’s named services are Japanese platforms; the announcement does not establish a comparable ban on resale platforms worldwide.
