This guide maps the base-game Mystery Gift routes and the Legendary and Mythical Pokémon listed for the Mega Dimension DLC, including its named missions and repeatable Special Scan hunt. It contains postgame and mission spoilers. The DLC story requires completion of the main story; some gift routes may no longer be available, so check Mystery Gift in-game before planning around them.

Which routes are in the base game?

The two optional base-game routes detailed here are for Diancie and Mewtwo. Both begin with Mystery Gift, but the gifts unlock different side missions. The official announcements describe how to start each route, not whether its distribution is still active.

Diancie: claim Diancite, then visit the Looker Bureau

  1. Connect to the internet and check the in-game Mystery Gift menu for Diancite. The distribution was announced in November 2025; its current availability and expiration date are not established by the linked announcements.
  2. After completing the main story, go to the Looker Bureau. Mimi reacts to Diancite and starts the side mission “Shine Bright like a Gemstone.”
  3. Complete the mission to add Diancie to your team.

The official route and story-completion requirement are described in Nintendo Australia’s overview. The official Pokémon updates page dates the gift’s start to November 6, 2025.

Mewtwo: claim both Mega Stones, then take its extra mission

  1. Check Mystery Gift for Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y. The official updates page announced the distribution on December 2, 2025, but the reviewed announcement does not state an expiration date.
  2. After receiving the stones, start the extra side mission that becomes available and follow it to encounter Mewtwo.

The official announcement confirms the Mystery Gift items and extra mission, but does not provide a current availability date or a more detailed step-by-step route. Check the in-game menu rather than assuming the gifts can still be claimed.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
  • As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.

How do you unlock the Mega Dimension Pokémon?

Mega Dimension adds a story and encounter routes in Hyperspace Lumiose. The DLC story content follows completion of the base-game main story, according to the official DLC page. Spatial distortions lead into Hyperspace Lumiose, where Hoopa and Ansha help the player enter; berry-made donuts provide effects useful there. Hyperspace Pokémon can exceed the usual level-100 limit. Nintendo’s DLC overview describes these features.

Nintendo Support says players who do not own the DLC can still encounter or obtain Pokémon added by it through communication features. That is an alternate way to obtain some Pokémon, not a substitute set of instructions for the DLC missions below; see Nintendo Support’s DLC and update information.

What are the Mega Dimension encounter routes?

The following route map follows the roster guide published by Nintendo Life on December 17, 2025. It is a specialist guide, not an official step-by-step mission list. Mission availability can depend on save progress; check the in-game mission log for your current prerequisites.

Pokémon Reported route
Heatran Caught during the main Mega Dimension story.
Darkrai Caught during the main Mega Dimension story.
Volcanion Encountered in a five-star Hyperspace zone.
Latias and Latios Five-star Hyperspace zones and the Special Scan pool.
Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion Five-star Hyperspace zones and the Special Scan pool.
Keldeo and Meloetta Five-star Hyperspace zones and the Special Scan pool.
Genesect Side Mission 191, “Collecting Four Drives.”
Marshadow Side Mission 192, “The Stealthy Shadow.”
Meltan and Melmetal Side Mission 193, “Dreams of Meltan”: catch Meltan; Melmetal is given.
Hoopa Side Mission 196, “The Djinn Unbound.”
Magearna Side Mission 156, “Restarting Magearna.”
Zeraora Side Mission “Raging Lightning.” The guide lists the mission route; the official announcement does not reveal exact encounter steps.
Kyogre After completing the DLC story, take “A Sapphire-Blue Legend.”
Groudon After completing the DLC story, take “A Ruby-Red Legend.”
Rayquaza Take “The Greatest Gift” after Kyogre and Groudon.

The guide provides route categories and mission names, but does not establish that its mission numbers become available in precisely that order on every save. Use the mission log to resolve what is currently unlocked rather than treating the list order as a required sequence.

How do Special Scans work?

Special Scans are the repeatable hunt for Latias, Latios, Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion, Keldeo, and Meloetta. These mechanics are reported by Serebii’s Legendary Pokémon guide, rather than by an official publisher step-by-step page.

  1. Complete the DLC story and defeat Rayquaza. Serebii reports that Corbeau then gives you a task involving Special Scans.
  2. Earn 25,000 points in Hyperspace Lumiose to request a scan from Philippe.
  3. Explore the resulting Unknown Zone for the encounter. The reported pool is Latias, Latios, Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion, Keldeo, and Meloetta.
  4. If you are still missing Pokémon, continue scanning. Serebii reports a guaranteed Legendary encounter on the next scan after five consecutive scans without an encounter, until the set is caught.

Serebii reports that Latias, Latios, Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion can be shiny; Keldeo and Meloetta cannot. If shiny availability is your goal, check the guide against the game version you are playing, since these are guide-reported mechanics and can be version-sensitive.

Do Mega and Primal forms count as additional Pokémon?

No. Mega Zeraora and Mega Magearna are forms of Zeraora and Magearna, while Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre are forms of Groudon and Kyogre. Count the underlying Pokémon once each. The official Mega Zeraora announcement identifies it as a Mythical Pokémon and says to look for a way to encounter it while playing the DLC, but intentionally does not give the exact method.

What should you check if a route or catch does not work?

  • The DLC story is unavailable: finish the base-game main story first. Nintendo Support lists version 2.0.0, released December 9, 2025, as the update that made the DLC story content available; it also records version 2.0.1 fixes and adjustments on January 21, 2026. Check that the game is updated.
  • A Mystery Gift is missing: check the in-game Mystery Gift menu. The official pages establish the Diancie and Mewtwo distribution routes but do not establish that either gift remains claimable now.
  • A named mission is not available: consult the in-game mission log. The specialist route guide does not establish a universal unlock order for every save.
  • Pokémon-catching attempts fail: Nintendo Support says a Boxes-related catch failure in certain circumstances was fixed in version 1.0.2. Update the game and open the Pokémon Boxes menu; this is a historical fix, not evidence that all current failed catches have the same cause.
