Defeating a specific Legendary Lord in battle can award your victorious lord that enemy’s defeat trait; you do not have to kill or wound the target. The current reference for Total War: WARHAMMER III is labeled patch 9.0.2 and dated October 1, 2026. It lists 114 traits, with effects grouped by race and faction. See the complete patch 9.0.2 defeat-trait list.
How do you get a Legendary Lord defeat trait?
Win a battle against the specified Legendary Lord. According to the community-maintained trait mechanics reference, the enemy lord does not need to be killed or wounded during the battle. Defeat traits can be gained by regular lords as well as Legendary Lords.
The same reference describes these reinforcement rules: when you reinforce an allied army and the ally defeats the target, both your lord and the allied lord may receive the trait. Reinforcing your own army does not grant the trait to the reinforcing lord; the reference also says a lord from an army borrowed from an ally does not receive it. Its summary is that only one lord from your faction can gain the trait per battle. These details come from a community-maintained source, so if a battle result differs, check the trait panel in your current game version.

The list is too large to reproduce reliably here, so use the linked reference to look up a particular lord. The examples below show why it matters to read each effect’s scope and conditions, rather than treating every number as an always-on personal bonus.
What do selected Legendary Lord defeat traits do?
| Defeated lord | Trait | Listed effects and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Khazrak the One-Eye | Beastscourge | For the lord’s army: +20% ambush defence chance and +20% chance to intercept armies using tunnelling, beast-paths or Worldroots. |
| Repanse de Lyonesse | End of an Errant | +5 growth in the local province, +5 research rate, and double unit experience gain when fighting Bretonnia. |
| Thorgrim Grudgebearer | Grudgekiller | −10% construction cost for all buildings in the local province and +10 research rate. |
| Sea Lord Aislinn | Not So Pernicious | +10% campaign movement range at sea; for the lord’s army, −50% casualties from high-seas, reef and storm attrition, and +10 leadership against High Elves. |
| Tyrion | Ulthuan Undefended | +1 recruit rank for all units and +2 melee attack for the lord’s army. |
These are selected examples, not a ranking. The full reference also includes the game’s flavour text; flavour text is not itself a gameplay effect.

How should you compare defeat traits?
A larger number is not automatically a stronger trait. First identify what the effect applies to, then consider its size, how often its condition is likely to occur in your campaign, and whether it suits your faction and army plan.
- Scope: Distinguish a bonus for the lord from one for the lord’s army, all units, a local province or the whole faction. A provincial building-cost reduction, for example, is useful where it applies, not a permanent character stat.
- Trigger: Keep conditions attached to the effect. A bonus against a particular race or movement at sea matters when that matchup or circumstance arises, not in every battle.
- Campaign fit: Research, growth, recruitment and movement can help in different ways depending on your current campaign priorities. There is no universally best trait independent of faction and situation.
Is the patch 9.0.2 list still current?
Trait data can change with game updates. Creative Assembly’s Update 9.0 notes describe new content and campaign changes, including two new innate Vampire Counts traits and changes to Archaon’s ability to subjugate other Chaos Legendary Lords after defeating them. Innate traits are a separate category; the notes do not establish that those additions are defeat traits.

For current effects, compare the patch label and date on the trait reference with the version of the game you are playing. Update 9.0 introduced enough changes that an older list should not be assumed current without checking.
