Warhammer Underworlds Online is worth playing on PC if you want tactical, turn-based skirmish combat that mixes deck building with dice. Steam’s 2026 listing shows 1,060 user reviews with a 70% positive rating (Mostly Positive). The main caveats are a narrower scope than the tabletop game, mixed comments about the interface, and no verified information about how active the online community is today.

Which product these reviews cover

The title is listed on Steam as Warhammer Underworlds – Shadespire Edition (Classic). Older references call it Warhammer Underworlds: Online. It is a digital adaptation of Games Workshop’s tabletop skirmish game, not the current tabletop edition. Reviews of the digital game and reviews of the physical Warhammer Underworlds range are different products and should not be read as one score.

What the Steam listing includes

The Steam product page describes a turn-based dice-and-card strategy game built around warband selection, deck construction, and battles for Glory. The figures below are from the Steam listing as checked in 2026. Steam ratings and store details change, so confirm them on the live page before you buy.

Item Value (Steam listing, 2026 check)
Title on Steam Warhammer Underworlds – Shadespire Edition (Classic)
Release date 21 April 2020
Playable warbands 14
Bundled content All warband and cosmetic DLC included in the main game
Play modes Online matches, bot matches, single-player challenges
User reviews 1,060, rated 70% positive (Mostly Positive)

The bundled-DLC point matters for buyers. Steam says the main game already contains the warband and cosmetic DLC, so you do not need to purchase those separately to access the full listed roster of 14 warbands.

#1 Best Overall
Games Workshop - Warhammer Underworlds: Embergard
  • A fast-paced, card deck-based board game set in the Mortal Realms of Warhammer Age of Sigmar
  • Contains 7 push-fit, coloured plastic Citadel Miniatures
  • Two warbands duel in the tunnels beneath the ruined city of Embergard, The Emberwatch and Zikkit’s Tunnelpack

How the core game plays

Each match pits two warbands against each other. You build a deck, choose your warband, and then fight over turns using dice and cards. The Steam description frames the battle system as a mix of deck building, tabletop tactics, and combat, and it is the main draw for players who like planning several turns ahead rather than reacting in real time.

The Steam product page quotes PC Gamer on the game’s design:

“It’s rare to see a game merge deckbuilding, tabletop tactics, dice, and card combat into one elegant combat system, but that’s exactly what Warhammer Underworlds does, and there’s huge potential for future expansion if the tabletop game is anything to go by.”

What the user reviews say

Steam shows a 70% positive rating from 1,060 user reviews in the 2026 listing. That number is a snapshot. It is a user-review signal, not a critic score, and this article does not cite a Metacritic score because none could be verified for this title.

What players praise

  • Tabletop feel and tactics. Reviewers who know the tabletop game say the digital version stays close to its pacing and rules feel, including some of the tabletop game’s quirks.
  • Deck building and combat depth. Several reviewers single out the tactical options and call the game a useful practice tool for the tabletop rules.

What players criticize

  • Limited scope. Some reviewers say the digital game offers fewer warbands and cards than the tabletop game.
  • Interface. Some users report UI problems.
  • Community size. Some reviewers mention a small player base.

These are individual opinions from the Steam Community’s top-rated reviews. An early-access reviewer, writing in January 2020 at the start of Early Access, said: “The game as-is at time of writing is a solid place to start.” That comment describes a game state from 2020 and should not be read as a current verdict.

Whether the game is still active

This article has not verified a current developer statement on ongoing development, and it has no current live matchmaking data. Community comments about queue times or population are dated and cannot confirm present-day activity. If you plan to play online, check the Steam discussions and recent review dates before buying.

Digital game or tabletop starter?

The digital game and the tabletop range serve different purposes, and the distinction matters for buyers.

The digital game

The Steam title suits a player who wants to play the tactical loop on PC with bots, online matches, or solo challenges. It does not require a physical collection.

Warhammer Underworlds: Embergard

GamesRadar’s review of Warhammer Underworlds: Spitewood, published 11 December 2025, says the expansion lacks the core rules and dice. The review recommends Embergard as the starting point for newcomers to the physical game. Spitewood is therefore best understood as an expansion for players who already own the core rules and dice. The review gave a price of $85 / £52 for Spitewood at review time in 2025; that is not a current price, and it is not the price of the Steam game.

Games Workshop - Warhammer Underworlds: Revenants of the Realms (4 Warband Pack)
  • Games Workshop - Warhammer Underworlds: Revenants of the Realms (4 Warband Pack)
  • Four Death-themed warbands in one packed box
  • Offers a variety of playstyles, including Take and Hold, Strike, and Flex warbands
  • Includes fighter cards and warscroll cards for use in Warhammer Underworlds
  • Plastic model kit - requires assembly and painting

Check compatibility before you buy

The Steam listing sets these minimum requirements:

  • 64-bit Windows operating system
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 10 GB storage
  • The listing notes that the Steam client requires Windows 10 or later from January 1, 2024

Check the current listing for changes, because minimum requirements can be updated.

Who should buy it

Buy the digital game if you want a PC strategy game with a tabletop feel, your priority is deck building and dice-based tactics, and you accept a narrower roster and mixed reports on the interface. Look at the physical Embergard starter instead if you want the tabletop game itself, and treat Spitewood as an add-on for players who already have the core rules.
