Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is an upcoming single-player action-adventure from Invoke Studios and Wizards of the Coast, set in a dark-fantasy open world. What is Warlock?
Warlock is the official title of a new Dungeons & Dragons video game, developed by Invoke Studios and announced by Wizards of the Coast. The publisher describes it as a third-person, single-player action-adventure in a dark-fantasy open world—not a tabletop role-playing game or a multiplayer-focused title. Hasbro’s announcement gives the genre and broad premise.

Who is Kaatri, and where does the story take place?
Kaatri is a veteran warrior who gains otherworldly magic through a dangerous pact. The official game site adds that she makes the pact with the witch Tasha in order to find a loved one, and identifies Darkon as the world she explores. Tricia Helfer performs Kaatri through full performance capture, according to the publisher announcement.
The premise draws on a defining tension of the warlock archetype: powerful magic comes at a cost. The announcement quotes Wizards of the Coast president John Hight saying, “Warlocks wield powerful, otherworldly magic, but it always comes at a cost,” but the sources do not yet explain the specific consequences Kaatri faces or reveal the full plot.

How does magic work in the game?
Publisher materials present magic as more than a way to damage enemies: spells and rituals are meant to help open routes, solve environmental problems and fight alongside melee weapons. The official description says players can use magic to overcome obstacles and access paths, while combining forbidden magic with close-quarters combat.
A hands-off Gamescom demo described by Xbox Wire on August 28, 2026 offered examples of those interactions. In the demo, telekinesis could hurl scenery at enemies or reposition a boulder as cover; moving water could put out a fire; and a tentacle spell could help create a way across a chasm. These are preview descriptions, not an independent hands-on assessment or confirmation that every example will appear unchanged in the final game.

What will exploration be like?
The announced concept combines open-world exploration with environmental problem-solving. Xbox Wire’s Gamescom preview also described collecting clues and finding “Mysteries,” exploration-focused sidequests that were presented as alternatives to simply following waypoint markers. That suggests discovery may involve interpreting the surroundings rather than relying only on a map route, though the preview does not establish how the finished game will guide players across the whole world.

What is still unknown?
The announced premise and preview establish the broad shape of Warlock, but not the finished game’s scope or quality. The cited sources do not provide a complete spell list, detailed combat systems, full plot, price, edition lineup, PC system requirements or final performance information. Xbox Wire’s account is of a hands-off demo, so it should not be treated as a review or evidence of independent playtesting.
