Make sure you have the right game and file
This guide is for the original Watch Dogs, not Watch Dogs 2 or Watch Dogs: Legion, which use different configuration files. On Windows, open the game’s user folder and locate GamerProfile.xml:

The <user-id> portion represents a folder under Watch_Dogs; its name can vary. PCGamingWiki lists this location for Windows video settings. If you play through Steam Play/Proton on Linux, the file is in the game’s compatibility-prefix environment rather than the Windows Documents path. Launcher and profile layouts can vary, so use the location appropriate to your setup. PCGamingWiki’s Watch Dogs page documents the locations and video settings.

Back up the configuration before editing
Close the game, then copy GamerProfile.xml to a safe location or duplicate it in the same folder with a clear backup name. Keep the original unchanged until you have confirmed your edits work. NVIDIA’s 2014 Watch Dogs Graphics, Performance & Tweaking Guide warns that incorrect values can cause the game to crash while loading a save.
Set Overall Quality to Custom
Before relying on XML edits, launch the game and set Overall Quality to Custom in the graphics settings. NVIDIA says the game may ignore file changes and use its Low, Medium, High, or Ultra presets if one of those standard quality options is selected. After choosing Custom, exit the game before changing the file so it does not overwrite your edits on exit.

Choose edits by the trade-off you want
The XML exposes graphics controls such as texture, environment, water, terrain, geometry, shadows, antialiasing, and level of detail. Treat each as a choice between visual quality and the rendering or processing work it demands; the cited sources do not provide a current per-setting FPS table or a validated profile for particular hardware.
Level of detail and geometry
NVIDIA describes multiple level-of-detail controls and notes that lowering CPU-intensive, physics-related detail while retaining higher geometry detail is one possible tuning approach. This may help when the CPU is the limiting factor, but the guide is from 2014 and does not establish a modern, hardware-independent setting. Change one relevant control at a time and compare both image quality and smoothness.

Antialiasing and supersampling
PCGamingWiki notes that the game offers several antialiasing choices. More demanding image-smoothing options can trade performance for cleaner edges, so there is no source-backed mode that is best for every GPU. PCGamingWiki also documents a SuperSampling toggle: changing SuperSampling="0" to SuperSampling="1" enables it. This is a graphics-quality option, not a guaranteed way to increase performance.
Sample XML blocks
A 2014 Steam Community guide provides an example CustomQuality block covering many of the settings above. It is a community example, not an authoritative or measured optimization profile. Do not paste its values expecting a guaranteed FPS gain, stutter fix, or compatible result on every system.

Apply changes and troubleshoot if they do not stick
- Close the game. Make sure Watch Dogs is not running while you edit the file.
- Open the correct configuration. Use a plain-text editor to open the Windows
GamerProfile.xmlin your user folder, or locate the corresponding file inside your Steam Play/Proton prefix on Linux. - Change only the settings you intend to test. Preserve the XML structure and quotation marks; edit values rather than deleting or rearranging surrounding elements.
- Save, then launch the game. Check the graphics options and play a repeatable section to see whether the visual and performance change is useful.
- If the game ignores the edits, verify Custom quality. NVIDIA’s guide also says a game-generated subfolder may need a copy of the configured file. Because folder layouts can differ, compare the active profile’s files rather than replacing files blindly.
- If the game crashes while loading a save, restore the backup. Revert your last change before testing any further edits.
Account for the game’s frame-rate behavior
PCGamingWiki reports that behavior above 60 FPS can affect Aiden’s coat physics. Treat that as a compatibility caveat documented by the community-maintained reference, not as a newly tested limit for every current system. If you notice odd coat behavior at a higher frame rate, compare at or below 60 FPS before changing unrelated XML values.
What XML optimization can and cannot promise
Editing GamerProfile.xml gives access to detailed graphics controls, but the available sources do not establish a universal configuration, a specific FPS uplift, or a current benchmark across hardware. Results depend on which setting is changed and whether the PC is constrained by the CPU or GPU. A text editor is sufficient for the described edits; the cited guidance does not require a paid optimizer or utility.
